The Gabba to be rebuilt...

with brisbane winning the 2032 olympics the gabba will be the main olympic venue and will be rebuilt costing around $1 billion. only seems like a decade or so when the last rebuild was finished

50k capacity for an Olympic stadium is canny small like, but at least it won't be a white elephant afterwards.

There was much made about London's Olympic stadium hosting cricket matches but I don't think it ever has.

It’s hosted baseball, so you could argue that’s as close to the hundred as can comfortably get.

Current Gabba looks soulless and shit. New one no different based on that. Australia has the worst grounds in the world imo.

i used to really like the SCG when you could walk around most of it via the concourse and stand around some of the bars and still see the game. the new members stand is OK as there's loads of space at the back of it and it's own brewery, but obviously not easy to get into.
never really liked the MCG at all.

Bit underwhelmed by the choice of Brisbane as an Olympics host. Not exactly up there as a World City with London, Paris, Tokyo and LA is it?

At least it's better than somewhere Dubai or Abu Dhabi

the stadium was redeveloped after the Olympics to enclose the ends and put a roof on it. it's since been used for club rugby league (virtually empty), rugby test matches, international football matches and they did try afl and 20/20 there as each bottom tier can retract to make the playing surface bigger, but i can't remember the last time any afl was played there. there's been a few concerts there as well.

if you can believe it a couple of years ago there was a plan to flatten it completely and rebuild a 'rectangular' stadium (so only for football/rugby etc) to get fans closer to the action costing around $1.6 billion, this wasn't well received so they then said they'd spend $800 million renovating it instead, which has also been shelved (for now).

i'm heading out there today as there's a massive vaccination centre just down the road from it.

Olympic stadiums are disasters
Wonder how much money is wasted in Olympic over the years

I used to love Australia cricket grounds when I was a kid more specifically their pitches when they all had very individual qualities. Brisbane quick, often something in it pre lunch for the quick bowlers, spin later in the match. Adelaide usually quite flat but beautifully picturesque, Perth hard, fast, bouncy and quickest wickets in the world. Sydney another great looking ground at the time and always somewhere you would play a second spinner. Melbourne a good balanced cricket wicket. Not only have the grounds become dull and dated the pitches have lost their individual qualities that made them special mainly down to drop in pitches.
