The batting

its time for drastic changes sadly

Cook - as great as he has been for years, a run of low scores followed by a massive hundred doesn’t cut it anymore. It’s time for him to move on. If he scores a bundle in county cricket he can always come back

Stoneman - hasn’t done enough. Gets in. Gets out. A weak link

Vince - a weaker link. Just fuck off

Root - super talented, super player. But not doing enough. Obviously needs to stay but maybe take the captaincy off him

Malan - deserves to stay based on his Ashes tour. Need big runs in the summer mind

Bairstow - see Root (today aside) and replace captaincy with gloves and bat at 5

Stokes - we all know how good he can be.

Time for Hameed again (weaknesses aside), Livingstone and Foakes. And possibly Jennings

Problem is all 4 of them had very ordinary tours of the West Indies with the Lions. Hameed in particular has had an awful last 18 months, he needs to prove his first season wasn't a flash in the pan and he's been found out. Nobody is banging down the door to step up, a lot to play for in the first few rounds of championship games.

I know. But we can’t carry on like this

The players you suggest are worse

we need a new leader and new attitude
Possibly. Or maybe someone will stand up?

Vaughan and Tres had fairly average first class records but the mentality for test cricket, may Livingstone or Hameed are the same?

I’m not saying they are solution, but this lot aren’t either

The biggest catchphrase on this board at times.

I'd give Cook and Stoneman ago after a hard winter, I think its fair

Livingstone if he is next man in at 3, go for it

Hameed will play again for sure aty some stage, probs in Sri Lanka

I worry about Malan, good pick for Oz, but I can't see him scoring runs on English pitches, he has no footwork, its all hand to eye stuff, which is no good when the ball nibbles.

Bairstow simply can’t be batting 7 in this line up, it’s been apparent for god knows how long now. He should bat 4 with Root at 3. I’d still stick with Cook although I’m really starting to struggle to make a case for him anymore. Haven’t seen much of the lad Livingstone but by all accounts he’s got a bit of attitude about him and if coupled with talent that maybe what this England side need so perhaps bed him in at 5 with Stokes 6.
I’m a big fan of Buttler but he seems to have chucked the white flag up in regards to red ball stuff so it seems Foakes next of the line in terms of keepers. Bairstow just can’t be allowed to be marooned at 7 I’m afraid.

Stoneman can have no complaints however Hameed has had a rotten year and both Hammeed and Jennings have been just as poor against a gentle West Indies A attack on flat pitches as Stoneman has against some of the best bowlers in the world. The opening positions are a real problem - nobody at all is putting up any sort of case to be selected although I haven't seen much of Browne tbf.

If Rory Burns doesn't at least get in a squad this summer (assuming the batters already in the side don't pull their fingers out), I'm burning Lords to the ground.

He scores more runs there than he does higher up the order like

You can't say he definitely can't as its working, obviously there is an argument for him higher up the order

Northeast, Dan Lawrence, Aneurin Donald? Lawrence looks like he will play for England someday so why not now. Good average, decent bowler aswell!

A lot of players worth a try. Don't see anything wrong with a player serving his apprenticeship in the full team if he is good enough and options are short, especially if they know they will be given a fair run.

SA avoided playing Markram as long as they could and he looks different class at times

You can’t compare him over the last 18 Months to him when he first came into side purely as a batsman, he’s a far better player now.
It isn’t working at all at the minute as we aren’t scoring enough runs as a TEAM it isn’t the Jonny Bairstow show. He needs to bat higher up the order as we don’t have the luxury of allowing him to bat 7 given how pitiful our top order looks.

Not convinced it will work.

I would personally leave Bairstow batting at 7 where he is scoring plenty runs. I also gives him enough rest time if he is keeping wicket in the 1st innings.
In an ideal world yes but we need runs at top of order and he too good to be batting 7 in this side. Chances are he’ll be left either high and dry tomorrow or have to play a rash shot and lose his wicket. Far too many 100 for 5 scenarios at the minute. Senior players like Root and Bairstow need to start getting us to 300s for 5 which will put lads under less pressure down the order. Something has to change as it’s been a dismal winter.

You could be right but it certainly isn’t working at the minute.

True but there are other lads to try, Bairstow plays so many shots from ball one, you don't want that at number 4

Even KP took his time when he first got to the crease, same with Bell.

I really think we just keep trying, we haven't tried as many lads as we think, there are a lot of good young players out there, yet we have given Vince nearly 20 tests.
