[the ashes] test 3. Manchester

Manchester gave us nearly 4 full days play and the Aussies weren't good enough to win in that time, despite having won a brilliant toss. By saving the follow on, we saved the test. They had us teetering and couldn't finish us off. If we'd followed on, we'd have lost.

I was almost with AA until this post...fuck them.

Was dubious how they'd fill this ashes channel . . . I've loved the 'best days' stuff that's been on. Great watching the Aussies skittled for 98 at Melbourne again before

Would like to see a few more master classes in between too.

Youre spot on with regards to the Aussies. Im not at all feeling any sympathy for them. Had they had the quality theyd have polished our tail off and stuck us back in. I never feel sympathy for Aussies in sport. I just didnt want to see us retain the Urn in a flat atmosphere. Doesn't do the importance of the series justice when the celebratory images are of blokes in track suits applauding empty seats from a balcony.

the pitches and conditions have suited the aussie bowlers in the series so far. dry and flat, not much swing, hardly any reverse, some turn...

so this is really a practice run for the series down here where the pitches will be similar, so as long as both sides continue to play in the same way (pretty well but neither team firing consistently on the batting front) then it will probably follow the same pattern ie: win the toss, bat and set a big total and try to control the game from there.

we're probably bowling too short (as we have done for my whole life). they definitely bowl fuller than us to extract a little more swing and to make us play a shot (as they've done for my whole life).

i'd take a drawn series down here right now...
