The Ashes - Fifth Test, The Oval

Bresnan bowled superbly at CLS like. And batted well.

Onions is a better bowler, obviously, but lets not pretend its a shocking decision by the selectors

Hindsight really, Bresnan did play well but I'd have still put Onions in beforehand.

Playing Woakes and Kerrigan, that's a shocking decision if ever I saw one.

Harris is an absolutely outstanding bowler. Just a shame injuries have stopped him being a great bowler over a sustained period of time.

The English defeatist mentality is just shocking. If you'd suggested dropping Warne and McGrath to an Aussie in 2006/07 for the final test, there'd have looked at you as if you were an idiot. Blatant disregard and disrespect of one of the greatest sports events in the world. The stupid old bastards at the ECB want to take a long, hard look at themselves. No wonder we'll never be number one test team for a prolonged period. What is it with this 'if the face fits' selection policy? Woakes is in purely because of Ashley Giles, not his talent or ability, which he has a complete lack of by the way. Kerrigan, what the fucks he done to warrant a place in the side? You've got Stokes taking wickets and scoring runs for fun recently, Onions and Tremlett taking wickets regularly not even getting considered, surely David Willey is more deserving of a place than Chris f***ing Woakes? Bairstow finally dropped after an awful series, when James Taylor is scoring century after century for the Lions and Notts.

For Warne and McGrath in this England team, the closest comparison (albeit miles away) is Swann and Anderson - Both playing.
Woakes is there as a all-rounder, been about the best on the County circuit this season.
Kerrigan is the number one spinner on the County circuit this summer, Monty is having his own problems.
Stokes is having an absolute horror season with the bat.
Onions and Tremlett have been in the squad this year, tell me how that mean they haven't been considered?
I would have Taylor in my team, like.

Also, how many times have we read (on here as well) that Australia are struggling now because they didn't blood anyone during the glory years? England are trying it now with one eye on the winter, when the series is won, yet they're still getting slated. That's the English mentality - everything they do is automatically wrong. Load of old revisionist bollocks IMO.

And it's nice to see Root again proving why 'he'll never be an opener'.

Averages 37 with the bat. And 25 with the ball. So is a fine first class cricketer.

You want pure cricket if you disagree

In all honesty, I don't know that much about Kerrigan, which tells me he can't be that good otherwise I'd have heard of him more.

Woakes has never impressed me in the few T20s/ODIs I've seen.

Mate. I'm not taking the piss, but your ignorance doesn't determine how good or bad a cricketer is

I agree on Woakes, I'm not impressed. But he is a very good first class player

Selection of Woakes reminds me of the old-school thinking where you had to have a dedicated all-rounder in your team, even if said all-rounder was 'fairly good' at best with bat and ball. eg Derek Pringle, David Capel, Craig White. At test level an all-rounder should be world class in one or other, eg Kallis, Botham, Flintoff, even Colly could justify his selection on batting alone. They should be the cream of cricket not a jack of all trades.
