The Alderete half-turn/spin

Like all of our back 5, and our midfield 3, he’s insanely confident on the ball. Still doesn’t stop me having a heart attack 20 times a game
Went through a spell where he was a bit slack. Back to his very high standards. I work with an Uruguayan and he’s just a lump of muscle, was on about Alderete and he was saying the Paraguayan people are insanely tough.

I really like having a tough ass team - sick of seeing us bullied out of games even as recently as Coventry away almost 1 year ago to the day. We've always been soft touches, but now we are the ones bullying teams physically. Quite a funny thought too that Ballard is probably the softest in our back 4 somehow.

this is partly tactical though- it can beat a press if you draw them on to you

It's totally tactical and no damage has been done when it doesn't come off. It's just some people see him lose the ball and assume it's sloppy. Not a difficult pass with a high reward if you get it right.

Best centre-back I've seen in a Sunderland shirt. He's ridiculous and how we managed to get him for just £10 million is mind-boggling.
Agreed. Sometimes I think he just gets a tad bored or complacent which will lead to the occasional brain fart but he’s absolutely magnificent 99.99% of the time.

Totally agree with the first point. Been brilliant recently though and an absolute steal for what we paid for him. However when he dribbles the ball out of defence I get as nervous as I did when Nyron was doing Cruyff turns in the box against Arsenal.

This is true, but he was an excellent defender.
He was, which is exactly what I want from a defender first and foremost. Many teams seem to want footballers first which is daft. Even a mixture is fine.

Look at the mags, they have at least 3 footballers playing in their back 4 and are shipping goals for fun.

We have defenders with defensive instincts. Ballard, Alderete, Reinaldo and Hume all come into that bracket. Yeah they can also play a bit too. Mukiele has less defensive instincts but he's a big unit and very hard to get past once he's in position which at times he is a little slow to get back. Mind he's great going forward so it's a balance.

Laughted my tits off, when Don Huchison,on my feed, likened it to Emerson Tone(The Wall) .
Don't remember the big man ever being particularly skillfull.
It’s only really Mensah who’s played centre back for us who I can remember having that kind of quality. He controlled a long ball with his chest once and there were audible gasps around the stadium. One of the best bits of skill I’ve ever seen, yet it sounds bang average when I try to describe it.

Seems insignificant but one of the highlights going to the match is to get in early to watch the warm ups. Well Alderette.
He often pairs up with O9 and they float 40 yard passes to one another. You can read the label on the ball. If there is spin it’s back spin.
Alderette’s party piece is to trap it on his thigh and chest , drop it a float an inch perfect return. I know it’s only a warm up but ……that’s entertainment.
