Test squad Zimbabwe (and let’s make it the match thread)

Might be second on the run scorers list by the second India game if he fancies a daddy ton here and we don't declare for a while. Needs 382 runs currently on 12,997,

Wonder how long we actually bat on for, may as well give them all time in middle. For the fans sake they've got to make it a four dayer.

I can't see any point from an England perspective atm. It is no test for our players. Not sure we are learning anything about the team. I cant see it helping us prepare for future tests this summer either

Zimbabwe might earn a few quid but it cant be any good for their player's confidence being pummeled like this.

It’s good for Zimbabwe really. We should be promoting test cricket.

Poland used to get hammered in football. Now decent

Preseason friendly ahead of the proper season starting soon

I get your point although I'm not sure Poland is a good example. They've been at 9 world cups and the first being 1938 and finished 3rd in 1974 and 1982.

I improved as a player by playing better opponents but there is a point where the gulf is so great that it becomes counter productive. Whether that is the case here I don't know.

We should be promoting test cricket. The lack of investment and effort in developing the world game has been criminal. That doesnt necessarily mean playing a test against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe may have benefited more from playing a county second XI.

Some people didnt like seeing some of the lower teams at the recent T20 World Cup but I thought it was great and probably did those teams the world of good. Problem here is that the gulf in class is magnified significantly over a test.

So I doubt this test is much benefit for England and question the same for the Zimbabwean players but I certainly could be wrong.

Yep
Pope has 7 tons at 3 from 48 innings

Trott got 7 tons at 3 from 73 innings

Pope does look sketchy as fuck at times, buts he’s averaging 43.95 right now in that position

Aye he scores 100s like and when he gets in he goes big

Hes not perfect but some of the stick he gets is way over top

I honestly think our batting will be ok, it has been for years now it’s whether we can take wickets

The best way to promote test cricket in the minor nations is for ICC to be fairer with the allocation of central funds. Tests again stronger opposition should be gradual; hence initially against slightly weakened teams from the stronger nations.

England also played mint btw
I genuinely think he’d be a world class 5.

Aye I like him with the gloves personally at 6

He was poor at 5 in his first run but I think as he’s batted so much at 3 the drop down to 5/6 in NZ you could tell he enjoyed it

He actually had a mint series in nz, which went under the radar.

Not sure I love him with the gloves. And he was pretty average to start with in his test career, but do think the stint at 3 in this setup would make him a real player there now

Reminds me a lot of Ramprakash (but handled way better)

Hope you get to London ok btw!

He never actually makes any mistakes mind, I think we are the only country who squabbles about keepers as much, lots of nations just give it to ever suits the XI

Thanks, hard work like, just trying to keep it together ha

Probably the most unbalanced day of test cricket I have ever seen. The ICC need to do better in terms of trying to improve structure in the lesser countries.

As I don’t think anyone whats to see matches like this where the outcome is more of less guaranteed before a ball goes down.

Pope and Crawley rightly under pressure before this test then both score hundreds to let’s be honest an attack that is not even division 2 county standard.

The worry is if they both continue to struggle v India no time to blood new players for the Ashes.

You can’t win away with an opener who averages 30 and a number 3 who’s so in and out.

I love cricket especially test cricket but found little enjoyment in that today.

I must be a flat track bully then. I enjoyed today's batting.

There's times and places for true tests. We'll be getting 10 in a row soon enough.

I don't see any problem with playing minnows. It's only a one off test. I bet the Zimbabwe players and fans relished this match. Just because we're light years ahead doesn't mean we cant help them develop.

I mean if some of the comments on here and on the BBC are to go by, we're better off in a 2 division test league. Endless matches against Australia and India. Couldn't think of anything worse.
