They'll be judged by different criteria. As an opener on the one hand and as a middle order batsman on the other. And then the question becomes is there a better opener and is there a better middle order batsman.

I just don't get the relevance of Crawley to Foakes though?

The relevance is that they had to bring Bairstow back in somehow and by giving him the gloves it means they can drop Foakes whilst retaining Crawley.

You may recall the paper talk about Bairstow potentially opening - because it’s clear to anyone with a modicum of common sense that the only real issue with makeup of the current side is Crawley.

Dropping Foakes and retaining Crawley is weak as f*ck. It is exactly the kind of ‘jobs for the boys’ favouritism that dogged the bad old days. Meet the new boss…

Foakes hasn't done anything wrong and Bairstow only played a couple of CC games where he didn't do much. Bit surprised they are fast tracking him back.
