Test squad v Ireland

Zak Crawley is the luckiest man in the world mind.

Only Mike Brearley has a worse average than him after this many tests for England.

A first class average of 30.47 too mental

What’s Crawley got to do with Ben Foakes? They bat in the complete opposite positions.
It's not a surprise, but I think it's disappointing. The relevance of Crawley and Foakes is the treatment of both. Foakes is dropped at the drop of a hat but Crawley gets backed and backed and backed, I think that sends conflicting messages and suggests favouritism. As pointed out above, Foakes' average is roughly similar to Pope's. I know he's not flash but I think he's stood up and delivered what England have needed from him.

For the record I'm not suggesting dropping or opening with Brook or Bairstow. I know Crawley and Foakes isn't a 1 to 1 swap.

Crawley opens, Foakes bats 7

They aren’t remotely connected to each other?

He’s unlucky for sure but I just don’t see who else we could drop?

Rob key: "It was a seriously tough decision to leave Ben Foakes out of the squad. He has been excellent for England in the last year, but Jonny Bairstow is one of the best players in the world whose performances last summer epitomised what we're about."

Is it just me that's a bit concerned about this approach, when batsmen who can hold an innings together when things aren't going right are jettisoned so easily? Foakes form hasn't even been that bad

When did I say anything about Ben Foakes?

This is a thread about the test squad for Ireland. Zak Crawley is somehow still opening for England.

People had suggested getting funky with the lineup to play Bairstow and Foakes previously. Not that my post mentioned this.

We've had to move Jonny from 5 without gloves where he looked sensational to 7 with gloves to accommodate Brook.

Personally as Pope will pretty much be opening unless were playing on tarmac that Ben wants(which I think could blow up in our faces )

I'd rather we got funky so Bairstow could have remained batting at 5 and kept Foakes in at 7.

Bairstow and Brook have to play in the middle order, therefor there is no room for Foakes. You can’t drop Root or Stokes. I don’t really get the controversy.

My other worry is stokes being injured and barely played a game in anger for months
Same for bairstow, who has had two 4 day matches and has seemed very slow and scrappy
Root barely batted for months
Harry Brook hasn't set the ipl alight a side from one 100 he has struggled.
Anderson older and picked up another niggle
Dan Lawrence seems to be distinctly average
Crawley below average
Also think we still struggle in the spinner department

Crawley still getting picked is a bigger mystery than Foakes being dropped mind.

Since the start of 2021 he’s played 25 test matches and only got into double figures 9 times in the first innings.

I’m not his biggest fan but my dad just remind me he scored the fastest 100 ever by an English test opener 3 tests ago.

Played 10 innings in the county championship this year scoring 350 runs. Has 1 score above 50 which was 170. So of his other 9 innings he has scored 180, averaged at 20. He's pitiful.
Lawrence record is even worse

He also scored 95 when nobody else in his side got more than 30

The selection of Dan Lawrence really slipping under the radar. Averaging a whopping 33 so far this season.

I guess the frustration I’m seeing on this thread and on Twitter is annoying because why does nobody have any faith in stokes n mccullum? They have been brilliant, selection has been brilliant and they’ve won nearly every game they have played.

They’ve said they are looking for players who can score quickly. They aren’t going to pick likes of Ben Compton just because they average more.

Bit disappointed at the reaction of fans tbh

Nobody ever suggested dropping Root or Stokes

A lot of suggestion was the below baring in mind Crawley has 16/25 innings in England he's scored 17 runs or less so Pope effectively opening anyway.

Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Bairstow
Stokes
Foakes

By that logic, how many of those 12 tests did Bairstow keep wicket in

Bairstow averages 37.4 with the gloves mind. I’m assuming that’s more than Foakes

I don’t get the need to change the whole team to keep foakes in, he’s done no more than OK.
