Takeover Rumours

You can't turn back the clock. I've traveled the country over the decades and when conversation turns to football when talking to other blokes when I have told them I am a Sunderland Supporter. Most respond with Oh you're a Mackem with pride in their knowledge about our regional geography. The truth is I'm not a Mackem but I never correct people when they address me as such. As for the world knowing about who we are I'd rather not be associated as a geordie as geordie has always been associated with NUFC. That was taken from us and bastardized by The Mags. Its of some importance to me that if we take off as a club the world also sees us as SAFC/The Mackems/ The black cats and not Geordies. Affairs of identity are important when achieving glory. And a final point the word Mackem wont be stolen from us from our Neighbours up the road.
We are Mackems, because everyone watches Sky and the word has come into cultural use. Like you, I never correct people, because I'm proud of my club and labels don't really matter. But I hate the cultural appropriation the Hall regime practiced on us. They are Mags: we are Mackems. In my eyes, everyone from the region is Geordie. I'm not suggesting we aren't Mackems, but as the Quinn era adverts at Newcastle Airport said 'Not Everything up Here is Black and White'.

There are other billionaire football club owners in England, and not all spend massive sums on their teams.
I really hope this take-over happens, because the owners aren’t wealthy in football terms, however it shouldn’t be taken as a given that the new owners will turn us into the new Manchester City.

OH come on man have some bollocks. You didn't directly call him a liar but you implied it. I'm not taking sides but this post just comes across as snide.

I don't think anyone is expecting man city sums to be spent

And the man who coined the phrase "Geordie Nation" , John Hall, is NOT a Geordie himself being from Ashington so is a Northumbrian, and allegedly a turncoat Sunderland fan. This would not be a surprise as there are a lot of SAFC fans in Ashington. Even NUFC legend "Wor Jackie" from the town was a Sunderland fan in his youth allegedly
Many Durham miners moved there for work. Bobby Charlton was a Sunderland fan apparently and was related to Milburn from his mother’s side.

That’s literally what you said. Saying you don’t believe someone is the same as calling them a liar.

its not though. if someone is a liar, they chose to distribute untrue information. saying you don't believe someone is simply your opinion whether the information is true or not.

Back in the dim and distant past (the 50s) 'Geordie' refered to anybody from north of the Tees and south of the Border. So all of Northumberland and Durham, including all the yackers, woolybacks and townies. This term wasn't invented by locals, it was a label used by the rest of the world to identify anyone with a 'Geordie' accent. In the days when regional accents were not mainstream, our dialect was as recognisable as Welsh or Scottish, but nobody outside the region would recognise the subtle differences between, say, Ashington, Bishop, Blaydon and Chester-le-Street.
As many have pointed out, the sea-change came with the execrable John Hall, who came up with the 'Geordie Nation' bullshit. Those days are over (I hope). They are Mags and Barcodes. WE are ALL Geordies to the rest of the world, and if the hopes and dreams expressed in this thread come to fruition, the whole world is going to know about it.
I was born in Stanley and have never called or considered myself a Geordie …

Ssn or bbc?

Half 4 in the morning? ⚠

You better believe it. Those guys just love all-nighters. Start at 9am, go through 12 arguments about amendments, and then agree on the original draft 19 and a half hours later, fuelled only by coffee and pizza (or Chinese via Deliveroo if they're feeling exotic). You probably think I'm joking - I wish I was - Mrs G has first hand experience.
