The parents bit is a bit low but the rest is absolute nail on the head. If he had went to comp he’d be thick as a canteen cup.It speaks volumes about his abilities that someone with his privilege (Eton / Oxford) has been such a failure, relative to his peers, in his career. Failed journalist. Set up a magazine that went bust. Tried to buy a stake in Oxford United but failed. Set up a two bit PR consultancy which has been downsizing. Spends about a year here working, fails, walks out because he can't hack it (while retaining his stake). Writes lots of letters on behalf of football clubs, trying to exploit his connections, making demands to the Government, which are predictably ignored.
At the age of 43, I don't think there is any evidence he has ever succeeded at anything he has ever turned his hand to.
Must be a real disappointment to his parents, who no doubt were expecting him to be a Cabinet Minister or something.
The family history is military. Their disappointment will be that he didn't go to Sandhurst and become a general.
I very much doubt Methven would even be considered.. They will want, I know I would, a professional business man with a deep rooted football track record in charge to oversee things.. Not one member of the current ownership or management hierarchy at a purposeful fit in that capacity.Someone will have to run the club day to day. Sartori or KLD aren’t going to do that.
Will they choose Methven to run it? They’ll ask themselves after 2 years of running it, it’s got a lot worse under the stewardship of Methven and Co.
Methven might get an active role to start with until they can find their own man.
Let us thank the f***ing Lord that he didn't.
I m afraid that would invoke the polar opposite of your reaction if he was like that with me.i ,d actively try to balls up his business whilst looking for alternative employment.Depends on the situation. Depends on the people. A good man manager can read the situation and get the best out of people. That said, if there was (and is) a lazy attitude to marketing/retail etc (as was suggested in STID) then it absolutely needs someone to put a rocket up their arses.
It all depends on the type of people you are dealing with. Years ago, my MD was an absolute cunt - used to bollock me (and others) for no obvious reason and have no consistency of approach. My response was "I'll f***ing show you" and it got the best out of me. It goes to show, that this approach can work if you use it on the right people
sounds like the perfect environment for him tbh, about 100 years ago at least.
sitting in an office miles away from any action, blaming everyone else for your mistakes and bristling at people calling out your incompetence. He’d have made an excellent ww1 field Marshall.

I'm no Methven sympathiser by the way, but STID did suggest a really shallow pool of talent behind the scenes at SAFC and not just on the playing side of things

Whilst I agree with you to an extent, I would counter that as a manager coming into a failing business, you make a quick assessment then ship out the people who are simply not up to the job. I've done this myself in a couple of places. If you take meeting Methven had with the Marketing Department on STID - not one of them had even bothered to read the brief he'd all sent them. That says it allQuack doctors can usually diagnose symptoms correctly, its the f***ing bullshit diagnosis that marks them out as quacks.
For example, Dominic Cummings is right about the UK civil service and some of its flaws. Doesn't mean going around acting the big balls shouty prick is going to change behaviour.
Honestly, you get no f***ing marks from me for going into a clearly failing institution - us - and pointing out things that are wrong. Most posters on here can do it about the team on the pitch and I wager a lot of us could do it behind the scenes too. It's not the job, the job is changing it and inspiring, cajoling, managing people to change their behaviours, alongside putting structures in place to improve them and us. Methven failed - but of course he did. He gets absolutely no marks whatsoever for his performance on STID.
I'd go further: the belief that shouty pricks deliver results is, quite seriously, one of the main cultural beliefs holding this country back. If you dig into the productivity and management evidence base (I know this is boring, please skim over if you prefer to take what I'm saying on faith) its crystal clear when comparing us to European countries - and the US - who have higher productivity and fewer lower productivity firms. They have a more enlightened approach to management - you can f***ing see that just by looking at football to be perfectly honest, but its all their in evidence too.
Most higher productivity firms in this country are foreign owned and run- or at least its a staggeringly strong correlation. We need to learn this, would solve a lot of problems.

Now, you don't have to be a shouty prick to achieve that, but I can totally sympathise with Methven's frustrations that were shown on STID. Doesn't mean I agree with his approach mind you
ive already said that, Grumpy is correct.I'm not saying he does. I'm saying I can't see why he'd want to do it anyway, which makes any question of his capabilities academic. For what it's worth, I don't believe he's suited to it. If he is going to be involved, I can see it being solely within sales and marketing.
I agree, cant see how the current regime will have any say in the future of our club, the new owner will make sweeping changes and that includes removing PP and his staff and the sooner the betterive already said that, Grumpy is correct.
Are they all thick in Plainsy ?
