Morse by a country mile - both books and TV
Then Rebus - both books and TV (second incarnation)

I'm a big fan of Colin Dexter, I thought his writing was very clever. I like the grittiness of Rankin, though he does seem to have lost it in his recent Rebus novels.

I can't get away with his character, seems to perfect a detective. That the movie

Not seen the movie. Every physical description of the character and all that he does in the books tells me that he doesn't resemble Tom Cruise in any way, shape or form.

And I always read it as a tongue in cheek, verging-on-parody thing anyway. It's all a bit daft.
