But if I understand it correctly there is no ongoing surname passed onto children. If for eg the fathers name is John and they call the daughter Janet then the name of the girl is Janet Johndottir

I believe the daughter gets the mother's name

I thought the use of "ton" in place names just meant "town" and so someone with "ton" in their surname just meant they came from a town called that.

Hence Newcastle's previous Roman name of Simple....

Same with Fitz which is Norman-French and funny enough survived in Ireland.

I once tried to tell a joke to one of my mates who is often a little slow. The exchange went something like this:
