I believe the daughter gets the mother's nameBut if I understand it correctly there is no ongoing surname passed onto children. If for eg the fathers name is John and they call the daughter Janet then the name of the girl is Janet Johndottir

I thought the use of "ton" in place names just meant "town" and so someone with "ton" in their surname just meant they came from a town called that.
