*~*~* Sunderland v West Brom match thread *~*~*

We absolutely battered WBA but couldn't break them down and as a result could be 4rth this time tomorrow night, with the 3 clubs everyone probably picked to go up before the season started now starting to hit form. We are starting to run out of steam ATM but there are loads of games to go, so we shouldn't lose hope just yet. Strangely enough the Sheffield United game should be a better game for us, given that they wont sit back and defend their box with 11 men behind the ball.

We are unbeaten in what 9/10 games? All we can do is take it on the chin and hope Friday goes our way.

Let's just stay in touch with the 3 favourites and hope they falter and we can take advantage of it.

🤣🤣🤣

He's an 18 year old winger ffs man.

How many "bulky" good wingers have you ever seen?

Jack Clarke was hardly Arnie ffs.

I can just see the recruitment team now, desperately trying to find an 18 stone winger with a 56" chest that can run like the wind.

Jesus wept man. 🤣🤣🤣
Bulk up , a few more lbs of muscle, maybe a ½ stone.

17 shots, 13 corners, according to the BBC
Don't think we've have scored if we played till midnight
One of those games. WBA were set up for a point and got a point. They'll have some sore legs in the morning, the number of shots their defenders blocked.

Mentally and physically just starting to thaw out

I’m not sure that’s the suggestion. Watson does need time to fill out. As you say, he’s 18. Some 18 year olds have the physicality and ability to regularly start games at a high level. I’m not sure Watson is quite there yet.

As you asked though, some of the best wingers to have played in modern times have been very athletic, physically robust players. Bale at Spurs and Ronaldo at United spring to mind…
Ok fine.

But the poster said he needs to bulk up.
He doesn't. He needs to be stronger on the ball. 2 completely different things.

The best winger this world has ever seen was Geoge Best. He was 9 stone wet through, but he learned his craft by playing against brutal defenders.

Ryan Giggs was hardly a collossus, but he did alright.

But ok. Bin Watson back to the juniors then, cos people have got the attention span and patience of a gnat.

He is a quality prospect, and did ok tonight.
Give the lad a chance man.

No-one is not giving him a chance man.

He needs to be stronger on the ball. He arguably isn’t strong on the ball because he lacks upper body strength and a developed frame.

George Best got kicked. Physically assaulted. But defenders weren’t as conditioned as they are now. And though a prospect, Watson isn’t George Best.

I don't know this, but I would hazard a guess the Watson is not a million miles away from Jack Clarkes height and weight?

What he needs is game craft. And he will only get that by playing at this level marra.

If we want him to succeed, we have to accept that.

He needs both. But whist the physicality isn’t there, I think he should be getting most of his minutes off the bench. Even with Mundle out.

I bet Clarke is half a stone heavier than Watson. It makes a difference

But you don't know. And because you think it makes a difference, doesn't make you right marra.

And if he's good enough to come off the bench, then he is good enough to start a game.

Chris Rigg is visibly more of a physical presence than he was last year. Possibly only 4-5lbs moe muscle, but it makes a hell of a difference. The simple fact is that Watson's getting bullied at the moment, and that little bit more upper body strength will prevent that.
