++++++++ Sunderland v Bolton match thread +++++++++

Poorest performance weve played this year but the result is more important after blowing the lead last game. Flanagan, Winchester,Cirkin, Onien and Neil all played well, as did Stewart on scraps. The rest were average to poor. Passing today was quite shoddy and our finishing was still poor
“Poorest …this year…”? This year? Seriously? Where have you been ?

SAFC 11. Seeing Inaccurate rather than pedantic. But your version does have a ring of unnecessary negativity you want to exaggerate.

We deserved to win overall, Bolton did well to frustrate us but 1st half thought they were poor, the last 15 minutes of the 2nd half they put us under a lot of pressure but we dealt with it and should of scored 2 more to finish them off. We need to put teams to the sword, we had enough chances to comfortably win again but made it hard on ourselves. Nothing new there supporting Sunderland, though Dan Neill was a stand out player today, never stopped trying even in injury time also after Wrights mistake last week, thought he did very well when coming on late in the game to keep Bolton at bay. 3 points again so Ha'way the Lads!

For me its not the late defensive substitutions that is the problem its the mentality. Just cos u have 3 centre halfs does not mean you have to sit so f***ing deep and invite pressure, thats what cost is against fleetwood. If ye know they have 2 big lads up front last 15 and are gonna pump it then why sit so deep and play into their hands.

The match was like a proper old fashioned cup tie, with both teams having a go and giving their all.
As pleasing as it was to grab all three points, after having to dig so deep, for much of the 2nd half, it's slightly worrying, how for large parts of the last two games, we've lost the battle in the midfield.
Against Fleetwood and Bolton, we struggled to gain any foothold in the middle of the pitch, especially after half time.
The fact we managed to emerge with 4 points from the two games, shows the character and resilience we now have within the squad.

Our lack of pace at the back was evident yday and is a worry.
Failure to take our chances again had us sitting on the edge of our seats (apart from the many who decided to go early, ffs how can they do that).
Overall, a decent game and one which we wudnt have won last season.

Boltons no.4 had a real good game. Good physical presence, neat and tidy and didn't mind a challenge. Maybe a cheeky bid in January if Bolton fade ?

Agreed.
I also thought their no.5 had a canny game, and had a good physical battle with Stewart.

They’ve got some cracking players. Afolayan in particular
His was the best performance against us, so far. He looked threatening every time he had the ball and we were never sure how to handle him. Mind, this led to a wonderfully comic moment in the second half, when we tried to foul him in midfield three times, before finally depositing him on his arse!
