Sunderland railway station.

Sadly, it was ‘waffle, waffle, waffle’.

NECA agree that Sunderland deserves more direct national connections but have the view that these cannot be provided with current rail track infrastructure. They’re wrong on this and I’m continuing to campaign.

Sounds like exactly what I said.

Not at all. They’re convinced of the need for extra services, they are simply saying ‘it isn’t possible’.

Lewis Atkinson MP was there and interested, I asked him for confirmation that the mothballed platforms under Sunderland Central would be promply re-opened - he said that he wasn’t sure and asked me to contact him direct on this, which I will.

Contractors appointed to help get Leamside railway project over the line

Been keeping track of this story, seems positive news.
'Contractors' is a bit cheeky as it makes it sound like it's related to construction, which isn't the case. It's just a more detailed feasibility study. AECOM won the contract quite a while back now as well. At least it's moving forward though.

It’s also, like everything else in rail, absolutely astonishing how long (and how expensive each and every step in the process takes).

After having been indirectly involved in construction projects in rail, other transport and the commercial sector over the years, I’m absolutely convinced that there is huge scope for savings to be made in rail with zero risk to safety or utility. However, as a largely publicly resourced area, and with limited commercial pressure from the client side, the area seems to have grown into an unwieldy behemoth. (See HS2 and Crossrail).

I did hear an interesting idea that along the line is a number of areas that houses could be built

If you can have people in areas that would then increase the use of the trains it would make it more feasible.

I've never looked into how true this is , so possibly absolute rubbish

I’ve lost count of the number of ‘Its happening’ stories over the last 20 years. Politicians know it’s popular to promise it. Sadly it just won’t happen. There will be reasons found why it can’t and promised funding will be withdrawn. Same with dualling the A1. Looks like 350k going into the pockets of God knows who with little accountability. I’d love to be wrong.

We will find out I guess, however saying that we do know some of the leamside line is going to be used for the Washington extension

I'm convinced there should be a cure for cancer but "it isn't possible". I believe I've explained at length previously that the platforms aren't simply "mothballed". When the current platform was rebuilt for the Metro it was extended out over one of the tracks so restoring the station to it's original configuration would require removing the platform edge back to its original site , relaying the track and demolishing all of the buildings on the current platform. It may even require removal of the lift at the north end . While you were doing this you'd only have one (physical) platform in use. All this work would have to be carried out underground.

When the station building was being rebuilt I pointed out that it was stupid to do this before the platforms were rebuilt but nobody listened.

The Washington plan is another stupid waste of money just like the Sunderland Metro was.

Just to clarify, you think the Metro to Sunderland is/was a waste of money?

I'm glad there's people like you, fighting the fight. Thank you from all of us who don't have the inclination.
