Sunderland railway station.

Reimagine

Woaahhh woaahhh woaahhh
Alarm bells ringing
Would it also be s better idea to improve the likes of seaham station and even open one at ryhope
Seaham seems to be constantly expanding and this would improve accessibility into Sunderland hence passenger volumes

No

Have there been any sketches of what the station would look like? Its a lot of money but how far will it stretch. It would be good to knock the station entrance down and rebuild as a modern glass structure but I'm not sure if £25M would stretch that far.

They should reopen the old platforms behind that light artwork. It was better when they had more platforms

I would agree and at least try to segregate light (Metro) and heavy rail.
All I have heard about is the demolition of Burger King and the creation of a "Southern concourse" which seems a bit odd, unless of course there are plans for the Northern end i.e. old Littlewoods building

exactly, there’s already platforms behind the artwork, use them to separate the rail and metros.

Sounds low to me

There's been a number of refurbs going back about 10years+ ago(?) and they said they've spent millions on it, I used to use the station frequently at the time and as far as I could see they managed to put an dodgy escalator in, a new lift in, a small waiting room, a glass bricked in room (with some dead people scurrying around), retiled the floor, painted the station masters door & moved the ticket office and install some art of things found on the metro. The 'millions spent' looked like an accountancy smoke and mirrors exercise

whatever they do, they should go for a design that’s going to have longevity ......maybe even go for a classical design and won’t need to be redeveloped again for a long time.

apparently only a single track behind the artwork. The other one was built on to widen the current platform size.
Waste of money. It's like putting Tesco Value cheescake in a posh box. It's the services that are important, not the station.

agreed that the services are important and will ultimately dictate the amount of money given to a train station redevelopment, regardless the station needs revamping. I suspect though that the current proposals will do little to refurbish the platform areas nor what you see when you come out of the station itself. Would be better to put all cash towards redevelopment of the northern end of the station and forget about the southern station rather than looking at both however no doubt the govt cash will need to be spent by a certain date meaning they’ll have little choice but to do something or risk doing nothing.
