Sunderland railway station.

Typical Sunderland reply?

It'll do.

We don't want anything nice/interesting/striking/a focal point to build infrastructure and facilities around, befitting of a vision to be a growing regional transport hub

Just functional will do thanks

The fact that it was laughed at when it opened says it all
It was only laughed at by morons who see the negative in everything Sunderland related.

While this forum appears to think any criticism of Sunderland has to be defended and hailed as amazing

Just accept Sunderlands new railway station looks shit. Claiming an Aldi store-like building is fantastic is bizarre

It was laughed at because it was funny. Some

It'd perfectly fine for a train station, it looks shit because its empty and looks like a warehouse

Maybe architects are just risk averse in the modern era

Anyone can draw a box, takes skill to draw a 3D cube though. I mastered that at school and probably missed my architectural vocation

It’s not about the architects skill it’s about the brief and affordability, I’ve said this many times but the majority of buildings around the globe are cube shaped as it’s the most flexible and adaptable design and fits street patterns. Architectural detailing on a cube is a different matter of course.

How many buildings designed in the last 50 years have been any good? A lot of them have since been demolished. Improved in the last 20 years but the concrete period was horrific.

Cubism is the problem then. Look at somewhere like Durham where they've been destroying the mediaeval cityscape for 50 years with crap boxes

Down here somewhere like Bradford is the same but that's always looked comparably awful with Sunderland

Yeah you aren’t going to get gothic architecture these days - you don’t even get that in London or New York, nevermind Sunderland. The issue in the north east and in particular Sunderland is the level of rent that is achievable as that ultimately drives the budget for architecture - that said that is just more generalist for most buildings your specific point on the train station is different as it looks to be grant funded in the main and isn’t deigned around a profit level.

I'm unsure about that, the interior was pretty much condemed across the board as bland and spartan. Sensible people time at the time just didn't say much because we assumed it was unfinished. The fact it's 7 months later and nothing has changed suggests, it actually is finished.

It's absolutely terrible if you ask me and is the last place I'd spend more than 2 minutes. I'd rather be downstairs on the platform and that's a not a compliment.

If I get on a train in Newcastle I check the departure board and wait on the platform. I would do the same in Sunderland, utilising the seats should I need them. I don't hang around the concourse admiring the immediate environment.

I am not sure what people are complaining about. It's a train station where you can catch trains from, not an entertainment centre.

why didnt you not put yourself to the front of the que to design it then..ffs

Its a the smaller part of a bigger picture of a new gateway to Sunderland...its the back entrance so to speak - its perfectly fine, doesnt need no Andy Wharhole pictures hanging up or a grand piano in the corner for god sake

You lose any debate with stupid comments like "do it yourself"

It's literally just along from the entrance to the city's shopping centre.

It's a bloody box that looks like an Aldi. Inside got national attention for how grim it appeared

You think its stunning. I don't. Fair enough

Let me guess you also think the new council building is exceptional too

Do you have examples of how the City Hall should have looked FOR THE SAME BUDGET?

Imagine the outrage from the Council Tax payers if SCC had gone for a more interesting design with the appropriate price tag attached.

Because it's a complete waste of space. If you don't need the concourse space then why build the concourse space with nothing there.

It's a white elephant and from a visitor view it looks like someone couldn't be bothered to finish it off. It's a terrible first impression.

That space instead could be a shop, an outdoor little pocket park, a few a fast food places to pick up some food for the train or whatever. Bigger isn't always better.

All of the above can be established within the concourse apart from the pocket park. (There is a huge park 3 minutes walk away).

You are talking about private businesses that establish the facilities you mention. It's up to them to set themselves up. There are plenty of businesses already providing those services outside the station. How do you know that in future those businesses won't arrive? If it was built on a smaller scale everyone would be complaining that it wasn't big enough.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Every new council hq in the country basically looks the same

Sunderland is exceptional for being one of the blandest in the entire country like

Not talking budget are we. Just something moderately innovative and appealing would be nice in my view

Have you seen North Tyneside council HQ? On an industrial estate and could be any office building. At least Sunderland council kept their main building in the centre of Sunderland. Saying that a few year back, City Hall might have been on Doxford international but we know better now. Know a few people who work City Hall and seem to really like it.
