My mate was over from Manchester this week and got a full introduction to the Sunderland music scene. He did bemoan the lack of a local music radio programme in Manchester after I introduced him to Spark radio. We are lucky to have this so I thought I'd give my thoughts on this weeks local music features (all very much IMHO). Available onYou must be logged on to see external links
Saturday 2pm The Bunker
14:06 There's the new single Own Youth Movement from The Polyfillas channeling their inner X-Ray Specs. The band seem to me to understand what punk was originally about better than almost any other Punk band I know.
The Live feature was a number of tracks and interviews from 28/9/24 Live At Otto's. I've not been to one of these yet but I'm regretting it now. My excuse is football away games.
14:35 The acoustic set from Revolve was excellent. I saw them at the Bunker in May as a full band but came away from that being really impressed by Ochisia and Last Case Scenario rather than them. Clearly I had missed out on appreciating them and will make up for that next time I can.
14:46 Scarlett Esme from The Last Time does a cover of Your Face by The Lake Poets. I'm notorious for not liking covers but I didn't know the song so it's okay to say this is a wonderful song delivered beautifully. Clearly I need to check out the original as well.
Sunday 4pm Local Music Show
16:56 Hivemind's latest track Big Deal is a blistering slice of punky noise. If you haven't heard it yet then this is your chance (it's been played a few time in the last few weeks). Sounds to me like the best thing they have recorded.
Second half was devoted to the Roulette Festival Battle of the Bands. They play an interview and a track from each of the bands. Producer Chris did say something about the result being split between the judges and the audience. I'm just guessing that The Monday Club who played first and didn't bring their own audience impressed the neutrals there (like they did me). Sounds to me that they should find another slot at the festival for these lads...
