I remember getting a train down to London a couple of seasons ago and talking to these two actors they were saying was a great reputation Sunderland Empire has as a venue.

The Empire should be protected at all costs. It’s a stunning theatre and one of the best assets Sunderland has.

Fantastic place and the calibre of shows it gets is incredible.

Whatever money was spent “ backstage” to enable these big shows has repaid itself many times over.

Daughter is going tonight, dad's taxi will be heading there soon, not certain about this but I think the empire has the biggest stage between Manchester and Edinburgh, a credit to the city

It is and the wife lives the place. She used to perform there as a kid and now the bairns perform there twice a year with there dance school and the little'un is in the panto this year.

I love the place, saw Slade there in the 70s and have been loads. I recall being in the Dun Cow watching a very drunk Wayne Sleep offer a bouncer out after he suggested that Wayne may have had enough to drink - all in good friendly spirits mind.

Funnily enough the Geordies never mention west end theatres or olympic sized swimming pools. Just airports.

Three of my favourite gigs there very contrasting the Dubliners the Boomtown Rats and Morrissey all quality.

Also saw Niall Quinn's doctorate speech there very moving and eloquent.

Not been in decades, a beautiful theatre, first place I saw The Dubliners and also saw a couple of Gilbert & Sullivan's comic operas as a kid which still live in my memory. Sid James liked it so much he decided to end his days there.
