I cannot even remember who was in the final of the World Cup in Qatar

Maybe because I’m getting old

But in days gone by it was an honour for the host nation to hold a World Cup and demonstrate how important football was within their culture

Earliest one I can remember was 1966 in England

Then 1970 in Mexico which really opened my eyes to Latin American football

Then the World Cup in Argentina with all the ticker tape and fantastic Argentina side

Then after that Italia 90 with all the operatic style and (then) romance of Italian football

What the f*** does a football world cup mean in Qatar, US and Saudi Arabia apart from masses of cash in Infantino’s back pocket?

There is no mass authentic interest in football in these countries

And I have zero interest in a football tournament in the fascist country that the US is becoming under Trump - in which “soccer” is a peripheral sport at best but which seems determined to milk every last cent from anyone foolish enough to get involved

I remember teams, players, scores from 78 to about 98. 2002 onwards not much.
I just think the older i get the less I'm bothered about the detail. In one ear out the other these days.

Since watching my first World Cup matches in 1974 I had watched every game I could until Qatar. I watched the Wales games and a few later stages games as well as the final, the sickening presentation summed it all up. I will try and watch Scotland's games this time around but the location in the USA who are waging war on some of the qualifiers is just as stomach churning.

agreed, Qatar has ruined world cup. Messi in the final is great to watch BUT the dressing on MESSI when lifting the world cup was weird. It make Messi looked so uncomfortable when bieng handed over. I hated that, creepy.

I think people usually say that when faced with a "what would you prefer" scenario. i think most people realise both club and country can be successful

Italia 90 is through rose tinted glasses (Gazza etc). The football was largely dull and I think statistically (goals, shots etc) was the worst WC in history.

And corruption in Italy was off the scale at that time.

Ever since 1978 I have been of the opinion that sadly the World Cup is nothing but a money making racket . I have seen nothing in the last 48 years that to convince me otherwise in fact the goings on of FIFA has confirmed it.

I doubt that I will take much interest in the competition unless Trump gets involved and does something terribly amusing that makes him look an even greater fool than he already is. I presume that he will have to award the trophy to the winners so that's going to have great potential to turn out to be some sort of a public relations disaster.

I’ll watch only if he wears that robe Messi wore at the last WC.

My grandson wants all the National shirts that our players will wear at the world Cup there's bloody loads, Netherlands, Congo, Haiti, Senegal, Paraguay, Switzerland, Morocco, think that's it.

I’ll be watching on the stick or in a pub, just like the last few world cups so makes no odds about revenues. I just enjoy watching football and want England to do well. Modern life is shit anyways so why would I cut a small thing I enjoy out of it.
