Stuck with the Hundred for 10 years

From today's Times

ECB closing in on new ten-year deal with Sky

The ECB is in advanced negotiations for a bumper broadcast deal that means the bulk of international and domestic cricket will remain on Sky Sports until at least 2034.

Tom Harrison, the chief executive, is expected to leave the governing body within the next few months and is understood to be keen to seal a ten-year deal with Sky Sports, which will begin when the present deal runs out in 2024.

The deal is designed to protect the broadcasting future of the Hundred, something Harrison believes is part of his legacy, and give some long-term financial security to the ECB at a time when the future value of international bi-lateral cricket is uncertain.

Sounds like the Hundred won't be free to air on BBC anymore, so if you don't like it then that's something, at least.

You don't have to watch it, I suppose. But I tried to get behind it and just found it annoying. What's the point in 100-ball cricket? I'd rather they just put extra resources into 120-ball (T20) and knock this on the head.

Pretty much as it is. West Indies tours and probably away Ashes series on BT.

Enjoyed BT's coverage last couple month. Sky's team will look very different by time the new zealand test arrives

I couldn't stand the hundred, however my son now can't get enough of watching cricket at the minute (so far Hundred, T20, ODI and couple of days of WI tests) so if it has the desired effect on a lot of people then that is a good thing. It shouldn't take priority at the detriment of other formats though

That's great and it's obviously the case with a lot of kids, but would he be less interested if the Hundred was played in say May instead of August? That's definitely the biggest issue for me.

Its been great for the women's game undoubtedly too

Insane that we are investing so much money and time into this format that no other country plays or is interested in.
The main problem I had was the awful, awful bright coloured graphics.
The naff names of the franchises man. Who comes up with this embarrassing waffle? The “Northern Superchargers” ffs.

Add to that the garish uniforms with crisp packet sponsors on the front.

I wouldn’t be seen dead wearing a shirt with Hula Hoops on the front.

There were rumours at some point last season that there were plans to increase the 16.4 to 10 teams, the logical additions being Glos and Durham (’The Far Northern Superchargers’ 😀).

What would people‘s views be if there was a team based at CLS? Would you go? Don’t think I would.

I think it has been good for the women’s game but IIRC the double headers with the men (which has increased their crowds) wasn’t the original plan and this came about due to covid restrictions - so a stroke of good luck rather than good planning.

Was interested to see Bumble’s comments anarl.

I don't think it would matter what month it was if its on the TV he will watch it

All stars, Hundred razzmatazz is the way to introduce kids to cricket in today’s world.

Gone are the days of school summer holidays when I’d tune in to Peter West at 10.45 on a Thursday morning and enjoy Chris Tavare making 30 off 150 balls. I wish that test matches were on free to air but that ship has long since sailed.

That for me has been one of the most frustrating things about the whole furore with the 16.4, the additional exposure for the women's game could just as easily have been achieved by setting up double headers in the Blast and sharing the broadcast with FTA. That's before getting to the most obvious elephant in the room that it would include all 18 existing counties, meaning more opportunities for new fans to go and see their LOCAL teams. This new support then hopefully gets engaged in their county's ODI, Championship and women's teams.

But I suppose all of the above would have been impossible, therefore we absolutely had to have a new competition created, rules of the existing game changed and fans of more than half of the counties alienated.

Chris Stocks, who is normally reliable, reports that North is favourite for the Director of Cricket role, Langer the head coach role and Strauss is open to become ECB chairman. Harrison is clearly a dead man walking and will be gone in a few months.
Wouldn't surprise me if Bostock succeeded him- he's apparently highly rated at ECB.

Those were the red flags right from the start. As soon as they started lying about the potential new audience and did a complete U-turn on the importance of FTA television and then lied about the interest in the T20 from FTA channels.

It's so frustrating isn't it? The game is getting so little back for the investment in this obvious power grab. If this amount of money had been thrown at the game via the existing framework we'd be getting so much more back.

I'm still stunned that some cricket fans were conned by it.

I've been saying for a while that the game is at a tipping point and if the 16.4 is locked in for a further 10 years then that's it, it's over.
