Stokes joins England for 2nd test nets

Interesting to see Stokes is down at Lords and has joined up with England for practice sessions before 2nd test. Also down there is Monty and Tremlett.
Its a pity Ben has not managed a couple of big scores in the championship or i reckon he would be pressing hard for that no6 position.
He would offer England so much and even now i still think he is a better batsmen than Bairstow. Good to see England have forgiven his Aussie cock up..

I'm not convinced by that myself.

He's the kind of player England are lacking. Someone who can just as easily score a ton as take 5 wickets. Our current 'all-rounders' arent really capable of that. 3 seamers is also a bit light for my liking.

We need a player in the Flintoff/Kallis/Watson mould really.

Just a gut feeling on my part i will be interested to see where both are by the end of The Ashes winter in Australia. I can't believe Bairstow is currently one of the six best batsmen available to England.

Fully agree. I reckon Stokes is the best bet in county cricket to do that. But he should have scored more runs in championship this season.

I thought you were talking about Yardy. Sorry!

Absolutely right about Stokes.

When was the last time Stokes did either of those?

Very poor season, batting average going backwards, bowling is more miss than hit this season. We might have to consider the fact that he might not make it.

Agreed he's been shite with the bat this year. I can't get my head round why. As for his bowling, I think that's improved a lot, he's quicker and more accurate than he's ever been and he's a very good option for us as first change.

I wonder if it could actually be worth dropping him down the order to 6 or even 7

His bowling has really improved this season in all formats.

As for his batting, his 1 day form has shown great improvement whilst his 4 day has gone backwards. Probably targeting the England 1 day team for the series after the Ashes, with a view to being taken on the Australia Tour as reserve batsmen.

He's got a 1st class batting average of 35, even factoring in the Riverside that's just not good enough. Nowhere near. 25 or so with the ball this year, sounds alright but he's comfortably our 4th seamer on figures.

I just wonder about him, is he going to be Ian Botham or Derek Pringle?

First class averages:

Michael Vaughan 36.95
Paul Collingwood 35.86
Ben Stokes 35.43
Andrew Flintoff 33.80

And his bowling average is 27.40 to Freddie's 31.59. I'm not at all saying he should be in the team but you can't use averages to judge him, there's a lot more to it than that and given his shenanigans in the winter the England selectors obviously see something in him, even if it's next in line for Bresnan/Broad's role rather than a genuine all-rounder batting at 6 (his 1st class averages are also better than Bresnan and Broad).

35 not good enough for an all rounder? :-?

You may well be right, and he has not scored the runs in championship cricket he should have done this season, but when he bats he has that extra dimension to his batting of having time to play his shots off the front and back foot that make him stand out in my opinion. I maybe biased towards him as i first saw him bat as a 16 year old for the academy i had never heard of him but he stood out head and shoulders above anyone else.
His bowling this season has improved out of sight and has the ability to swing the ball both ways at decent pace.

As soon as he finds a bit of bat form it looks like he's back in . Odis at least

Glad they are backing him, he could have gone a bit 'plunkett'

Interesting about MV and Colly, although both of them are made of steel mentally, which Stokes isn't.

Look I'm not saying he isn't going to make it, but this season was supposed to be big for him, and he's gone backwards. The way he's batting atm he could only make the team as a bowler, and his average this year isn't great (again, taking into account where he bowls the majority of his overs).

Perhaps it's because I/we had such high hopes for him, he gets it a little bit tougher than the usual County pros.

35 not good enough for an all rounder? :-?

To bat at 6 in the Test team (as the Op was saying), absolutely no way.

Same as Flintoff, whose batting was a weak link in the side towards the end.

He was averaging far less than 35 then :-?

If stokes one day averages 35 for England and takes wickets below 30 it'll be a long time before he lost his place
