Staff Redundancies at SAFC

i think there is two ways of looking at it , one its emotional and upsetting that people are losing their income, but on the other hand we dont know what structures the club has in place. it could be a massive clusterfck of an operation and bain is simply addressing that.

will wait to see if any further details come out

Very true. It does make me wonder how clubs get into such a hole, surely at some point some bright spark says hold on, we are dire year on year what are we doing wrong, but we seem to have an uncanny knack of repeating the same mistakes over and over like a massive footie Groundhog Day

But if they don't need the staff why keep them? It's awful for the people involved but, as an example, if we go down they might decide not to open all of the hospitality areas if there isn't the same level of interest. If there's an area not open, they don't need the people who worked in there (bar staff etc). They could keep them but other areas already have sufficient bar staff so basically they'd be keeping them on just to be nice to them even though they'd have nothing to do, no business in the world would do that.

Unfortunately, regardless of what's happening with the players, the people would need to go as they're no longer required. Hopefully the club could help them find other work, hopefully we'd come back up, employ more people and not be shit, enabling us to keep them. At the minute though there's nothing the club can do about it thanks to their own crap decisions. I hope as few people as possible are affected, the best thing the players can do is ensure they give 100% every game, if they can stay up the cuts, in some cases, won't be needed

i think everyone pictures the tea lady being marched off the premises but how many consultants and other such staff do the club employ ? we had people clamouring for the hair guy to get the sack for months cos we dont know what he does, plus some other senior positions. Need more detail before kicking off too much

Agreed. By the sounds of it a lot of the losses may be down to the shift in focus. People want us focusing on football, it's the right thing to do. I don't know how many are employed purely to work on the invest in Africa type things or the concerts but, if we're not pursuing these avenues any more, then naturally people won't be required. We definitely need a lot more info before we can think about criticising too much, even though we can still sympathise with anyone likely to be affected

It still all comes back to football though, if we are doing well on the pitch revenues increase due to league position and increased commercial revenue, and indeed being on telly more at 500k a pop over the standard contract games
If we are buying the right players and selling surplus at a profit the standard of player increases etc etc. I'm not sure how much the redundancies will save in the great scheme of things but I'd imagine it's a blip compared to the turnover of the club, but if we are preparing for a possible relegation we will have to cut our cloth accordingly across the whole club.
As for the concerts yep, all the staff associated with them will have to go, although I still can't get my head around the fact we can lose money hosting sold out concerts, mental

Good post. No-one wants to see anyone lose their job but we aren't an African charity or a concert venue....we're a football club and all resources should be concentrated on that core activity. Mind you,when you look at the timing of this,it's another example,if any were needed,of just how badly this club has been run for the last 6 or so years and the disconnected shambles we've become.

Oh aye, get it right on the field and we'll be creating jobs not losing them, alas unless the players pull their fingers out that's not going to be the case. I agree with you about the concerts, how the fuck we lose money I don't know. It's a shame, I thought they were great for the city, will have given a big boost to local businesses in Sunderland and put the place on the map a bit, pity it all looks to have been stopped

I think if that is the case then fair enough. But it wasnt written that way. It also leaves a bit of a sour taste if done for 'financial reasons' given the club have just splashed out a load of money on a trip to NYC, regardless of its benefits.

The Chronicle claim its admin staff at Black Cats house plus marketing and sales people.

Its a curious one. We seem to have deleted the post of Commercial Director and now letting marketing and sales staff go.

Forna club with pretty mediocre commercial revenue that's an interesting one.

They were a perfect way for the club to make more money, and the city to be rammed full of concert goers for a weekend and all the knock on effects with hotels pubs, restaurants etc etc.
Imagine the beer sales alone that can be knocked out at a concert
 
Not one person has actually asked what the roles are.

Not one person would grumble about getting rid of an unnecessary wage for the good of the clubs future.
