Considering the alternatives I don't think it was, given the people available for this series, there is no one who is a better player than Bairstow.

The alternatives were sparse granted, I just feel Bairstow is lucky to have been given another chance after showing no form in red ball cricket for 2 years.
He has been out of the test team for well over a year like. Who else has been playing red ball cricket consistently in a global pandemic? Whens he meant to have had the chance to play?
Jack Leach has played 4 first class games in 18 months for example.
Sorry like its an obvious pick for a 2 test match series when half the team have been rested, in the middle of a pandemic, when he made a 100 at the same position literallt 2 years ago at the same ground

Exactly. 3 of the top 6 are missing, it is not a big deal like, needs must for a 2 test match series.
I am not really sure what you are expecting though. I still think you have too higher expectations like personally.
Lot of cricisim on this board when the keeper doesnt get big runs every game really, batting at 7 is about getting quick runs with the tail mostly, not big 100s.

Saw an hour or so before heading off to work this morning. Pretty solid by England, but Sri Lanka batted terribly, this could be a short game.
