Sri Lanka tour

Because since that knock for England and Yorkshire he averages 20 and has 2 half tons in 22 innings.

Nobody can say that is form for
a recall.

Then we should factor in leaving Crawley to develop at 3, after his excellent double ton.

So? What relevance has batting in Yorkshire in May got to do with playing spin in Sri Lanla.

Crawley batting at 3 in Sri Lanka has absolutely no relevance to batting 3 anywhere else

and Burns isn;t here

this obsession with Bairstow man,. 4 of our top 6 arent in the squad, Its an obvious selection ike. I know you dont like them but give it a rest man

3 Seamers by the sounds of it. I know they’re missing Stokes but I wouldn’t play 3 quicks. They won’t bowl much at all

Ali was gonna play at 7 but obvs can't

The squad is a batsman light but 7 would leave then with 4 bowlers.

I agree though, someone isn't gonna bowl many overs at all

Curran expected to play, bit pointless in Sri Lanka, not going to bowl much and not a strong enough batsman yet to justify the all rounder spot.

None of the seamers would be expected to bowl much, batting becomes more important. Curran bats better than all the other options (Woakes is a good bat, but not so much away from home - his record sucks). Curran also provides a different angle and some variations which can help pick up a daft wicket somewhere. Which is really all you want. He'd be my first pick of the seamers because of his batting, honestly. Second is Wood. Seems pointless picking a third from all reports. A spinner often took the new ball last time.

Last time Broad & Anderson bowled 55 overs in the series. 1 wicket. The selectors seem to have backed themselves into a corner of picking one of them, when really they're just there to bowl a few with the new ball or bang it in. I hear the odd bit of optimism about reverse swing, but unless you've got some sandpaper in your trousers that seems unlikely. A swing bowler might get a full 4 overs from one end where the ball moves, then they've got what is basically an orange until the next new ball.

But Cricinfo's report is saying there's been some rain about, and some cloud cover expected, so I figure that'll let England make the easy choice and go with 3 seamers, 2 spinners plus Root/Lawrence. Picking a leggie who can't bat isn't England's style.

They more than likely dont think the other spinners are ready, Parkinson and Crane are nowhere near test standard yet IMO

Rashid got picked last time as he was different to the other 2

I think considering the plan was to play Ali at 7 for this tour, I think its fair enough to go with another seamer, looking at the squad they picked

As I said to a poster earlier, we are missing 3 of our top 6, including our best all rounder,

So I think the team is more or less the best they have

Missing the players we are is going to mean the team will suffer. This series will be harder than a lot of people are expecting. Sri Lanka are coming off the back of a series albeit in different conditions whereas we haven't played for months.

It's an obvious selection as he's the only spare batsman in the squad. It was a questionable selection to pick him for the tour itself given his recent form in red ball cricket.

Quite interested to see how Lawrence goes, been around a while now and has made steady progress after a spectacular start in county cricket.
To think he and Burnham where considered the two best batting prospects in their age group after their u19 world cup 4 or 5 years ago.

Jos needs to perform with the gloves. No doubt he will score runs but I have some doubts over his keeping ability on spinning pitches.
I have doubts about both to be honest. But he deserves to continue, and when missing Stokes he has to have the dual role (arguably you could play both (him and Foakes) and then Stokes instead of Curran)

I’d have rested Buttler for this series. Seems daft he will end up missing 2 of this India tests now

Foakes is meant to be pencilled in for those 2 tests...which begs the question why he's not keeping in these tests ... if bairstow scores runs I can see them giving him the gloves for the tests buttler is going to miss

Mathews (specialist batsman only) and Chandimal are big returns for Sri Lanka. Mathews hasn't really done much the last 5 years besides a 200* against Zimbabwe mind. But still quality albeit injury ravaged. Chandimal is also decent on paper, averages just over 40 but only averages 40+ against India of the decent Test sides. But given how bad the rest of Sri Lanka's batting is, they're still big upgrades.

Sounds doubtful whether they'll play Lakmal without the match fitness. Albeit he probably won't be a big factor anyway.

It’s not like

3 of our top 6 are missing, we’ve had to play an uncapped kid at 5

He averages over 40 in Sri Lanka and India

Think people just like moaning for the sake of it
Weathers not looking great for it

This will be so annoying like. It’s been raining a lot over there

Buttler was so so good in the summer chunky that needs putting to be bed and he deserves a long run unquestioned

I know people disagree but I really think people have far too higher expectations about the wicket keeper

There’s very few keepers in test history who have averaged over 40, only the best have. Not sure why people think this is a given. A keeper averaging 35 or around that is absolutely canny like.

People seem to want the perfect gloveman in the world and someone who will average 45 or someit. It’s never gonna happen.

It’s a patched up team, with big players missing, and the most illprepared England side for a test series ever

But it’s a welcome break from real life

None of the players will get any criticism from me, some haven’t played a red ball game for so long

Leach has played 4 first class games in 18 months

As I said, he deserves to continue. I’m still not convinced, but that’s my opinion
