Just to make this simple.
Spurs are the only team referred to more as their nickname that shouldn't be their nickname.
Wolves for Wolverhampton Wanderers is the expected nickname.
David Hotspur would not be referred to as Spurs. He would be Dave Hotspur.

So what about QPR? That’s not their name,yet they go by it. Interestingly if you google QPR V Spurs, the first thing that is thrown up some old results between QPR AND TOTTENHAM.
