Springwatch with Hellsbells

IMG_0678.pngLatest update:

We have seven eggs. But as you can see from this photo. The nest is a bit wrong. The eggs are on the bare wood surrounded by the nest material. Rather than sitting on soft nest material. She comes in With extra feathers so she must know that something isnt right. I’m not yet sure if this is going to be a problem when they hatch or not.

Superb that.

Right. Bit of a nightmare just now.

Think she’s got her foot wrapped around some of the nest material. She’s struggled to leave the nest and has left it in a bit of a state. Then she spent ages at the door to the nest trying to pull the thread I think.

I’m worried she won’t be able to get back in, and if I go in and move it back she’ll abandon the nest.

Any votes, Springwatchers? She’s been gone 30 mins.

Quick update: Mildred is spending a lot of time in the nest now. Incubation mode. I think we have seven eggs car might have lost some underneath the nest when it messed up the other day.

This morning we had a cute interaction:

You can see that the eggs are all on bare wood so I’m not sure how that’s going to work when they hatch. The eggs all get moved around a lot when she comes in and out and I’m not sure if that’s good for them.

Should share it with Springwatch

I saw my first Swallow of the year on Monday
Here he is, looking a little bedraggled

I thought it'd be best if he gets himself smartened up before his lass gets home.
She arrived this morning. I saw her sitting about 30 yards away, totally ignoring his chat-up lines.
Common fact...
Female Swallows prefer a partner with a long tail.
Pretty much my experience with the birds I've known  ;)

It may be in a part of the country where there is precious little to do, though when you’ve had my holiday CV you tend to take anything that comes, but one good thing about Levens in Cumbria is the wildlife. When it gets to dusk you see Bats. During the day Egrets, Mallard ducks, Moorhens and I’ve seen the odd Swan on the little stream that runs by the house we are staying in. In the stream you get tiny fish and invertebrate creatures as well as snails.

Had them along our way for 3 weeks now. We always seem to be the first round here to get them back. Not as many as what we used to get mind

Next holiday, get yourself to Silksworth in Sunderland.
All of those can be seen at Silksworth lakes, in addition to herons, cormorants, tufted ducks, and if you're at the right time, a flock of ring necked parakeets often flies over.

If you don't already have it, get the Merlin smartphone app which will help you identify the less obvious birds.

Latest: we have seven eggs. They’re on the bare wood still so no idea how they will be when they hatch. There might also be more under the nest after it was shoved around but hopefully seven will be okay.

She’s sitting in it for most of the day, George is coming in and feeding her regularly, and now and again she pops out for a poo and a snack.

Reckon we might have a hatching next week at the earliest.
