Millwall were a single point from automatics and they drew with them in January so a win there and they’d have been in the Premier League, Southampton admitting they spied on Ipswich will help them as it adds a bit of doubt if Millwall would have got automatics. Ipswich took 4 points of Southampton!we can never 100%tell if they gained any advantage as perhaps they might have lost both without the spying.they cheated systematically as a club and need to be significantly punished and you cannot equate in game cheating by individual players to systematic cheating by the club.also why just three clubs?it sounds to me they did it to everyone and CCTV only caught them out for three.

It’s the modern way marra, faux outrage, expression of maximum shock and horror, it’s as if this place was populated with sanctimonious individuals that have blemish free lives.

Are you honestly telling me that if Coventry had beaten us last year, and then we found out afterwards that they’d been cheating by watching our preparations and therefore knew all our set piece routines and how we were going to set up, that you would have agreed that Sheff Utd should have a bye in the final?

The argument is that they didn't lose the semi final fairly. They were cheated out of a semi final, so haven't been legitimately beaten. And the verdict and guilty plea backs that up.

The argument around the impact of spying is entirely subjective. Only thing I will say on it is that it must offer a reasonable benefit to Southampton, or they wouldn't bother risking doing it knowing the EFL were going to come down hard on them for doing so - no-one is naive enough to think otherwise.

That's not really what happened though. Leeds made the EFL look like mugs that time - there was an outrage and then the EFL went to the rulebook and went "oh shit there isn't actually a law about it" and then shit their pants. The only positive that diffused that was that Leeds lost anyway, so it calmed itself down. And Leeds only (admit to at least) did it once whereas Southampton have admit to 3 - but I'd rationalise that if you did it against relegation fodder Oxford its highly likely you did it for every single game you could get access to.

I’d bet every penny I have they done it for all games.

I’ve never compared it to in game cheating, I compared it to Derby who financially cheated by playing with amortisation figures to get around PSR or whatever it was called that resulted in Boro missing out on playoffs. It’s not the exact same but that decision effected everyone in the league and Boro only got between £3-7m in settlements so that’s what Wrexham will likely get.

They 100% gained an advantage with everyone spy mission even if that didn’t transpire to a win. Millwall are the ones who will get biggest pay out if they can find evidence of Southampton spying on them as even though it’s a what ifs and maybe the lawyers will have a field day.

The players are either idiots or knew, one game I can understand but at the minimum 3 games knowing exactly what your opposition will do surely has to raise some red flags. Now they are crying and pretending not to know anything dodgy was going on.

Don't forget that Boro claimed that they had evidence from a former Southampton employee. Nothing has been said publicly about who that person was or what they might have had to say but that isn't at all surprising as it would have almost certainly led to them facing personal threats etc and being put into danger.

Last night the EFL talked about Southampton's "..multiple breaches of EFL regulations.." which I thought was a strange way to describe the three offences that we know of.

If we beat Coventry on the pitch and then got kicked out because some young lad from the backroom team had filmed a bit of their training I think we'd be fuming.

It's always the lazy comparison though, referring to the Man City case. The two aren't comparable, not least because it's two separate bodies dealing with it, but also because in one case Southampton admitted it, in the other Man City deny their charges and do their best to stall, block and delay the investigation through a massively expensive legal team.

I said above, as long as all former & future cheating is treated the same I'm ok with it.

That would mean Man City being stripped of all their titles during their cheating period (NINE YEARS) and significant demotion (at least a few leagues).

Mental view of things.

I agree they're not comparable - what City did is way worse.

Ok well then I assume you agree Man City's punishment should be massive.

The fact they're using lawyers to try to cheat their way out, like Wall Street criminals do is disgusting and should increase their punishment.
