The instant change in attitude on the Saints forum is quite something in the immediate build up to and then the subsequent announcement. Hundreds of posters being very cocky, absolutely full of it taking the piss out of Boro, saying that any punishment will be no more than ticking off and that Boro will instead be charged with bringing the game into disrepute. From that to "we are now totally fucked for years", wind the club up etc.

The fact that Eckert's defence seems to be 'well everyone does it overseas', if I was the Southampton board, I'd be booting him out the door. There was talk on the radio this morning about players now looking into the possibility of loss of earnings. The whole thing is a mess. They've accepted that they've spied on 3 games but not won any of them, there's very little chance that that's all the spying they've done, surely. Punishment had to be heavy to dissuade anyone else from trying it in the future.

Yeah, Hull were the only team 100% confident of being in any Final to be played and could prepare accordingly. They have had plenty time to prepare for both sides and can focus on Boro the next few days. I don't see this as being a major issue for Hull, maybe we will hear their views in due course though.

I don’t get this “well Boro had their chance and they lost”. They lost because Southampton had an unfair advantage against them - as a minimum knew what their tactics were going to be, how their set pieces would likely look like and then had time to prepare a defence to those tactics and set pieces.
He will no doubt be one of the fans that was ripping the piss out of Boro right up until teatime yesterday.

They had an opportunity, although they were at a disadvantage; it was still an opportunity. I mean, if you watched it, I'd find it difficult to suggest knowing their set pieces defined the outcome. It wasn't fair on Boro, nor was it fair on any of the other clubs they spied on, but most of all, the carry on is unfair on Hull, who have been caught in the middle, entirely not of their making and have had no opportunity to change the outcome.
If I were them, I'd take legal action, tbf if I was a club within 6 points of the playoffs, I'd do the same.
Exploring their options, I can only assume the EFL.

I would suggest their options are close to zero. The EFL have not breached any of their own regulations, in fact they have acted very swiftly and decisively. Given the circumstances I would say that the competition rules have been applied in as timely a manner as possible.
There has been no direct harm to Hull City, just some (arguably) unavoidable uncertainty about the identity of their exact opponent, but they knew it would be one or the other.
Law courts don't like interfering in sporting competitions like the FL where a full domestic arbitration mechanism is adopted/supported by all of the members. Any alleged breach would need to be extremely and directly harmful to Hull, can't see that at all.
