They can ask, but they've got no powers to do this. They're not the police, they're a kangaroo court of a private company. Unless he bought a pin badge at every club shop, they won't have any way of obtaining this information. Even then they probably can't trace a card number or partial card transaction down to an individual transaction.

I think that the (probably) unique situation re the bank card is that he was using in the hotel owned by the owner of the football club. As he ran away through the hotel the club would have been able to get the hotel cctv checked and therefore would have seen him buying the coffee at a certain time and the hotel payment system would log a payment at that time . They won’t be able to access his bank details.

Sorry but they didnt spy on the 2nd leg. Boro had 120 minutes and couldnt beat them.

Southampton cheated as you say yourself.
The impact of that we'll never truly know, but they've broken a rule and shouldn't benefit to the tune of £130m because of it.

I think one difficulty could be that if they had been caught spying earlier in the season the penalty may well have been points deduction. However, the timing has created a real problem for the EFL. Points deduction is probably the correct decision but if Southampton subsequently get promoted they may will feel it was worth it. There is no clear sanction but probably stopping Southampton from getting their mits on £130M seems correct. Equally letting Boro into the final seems a bit of a stretch as Wrexham could argue they should have been in the play offs at Southampton's expense. None of it is straight forward and actually all of this publicity will probably have put off any club even considering this in the future.

Tbh I dont think it spying mattered too much on the results (though the cheating should still be punished) but its impossible to really say. 120mins away is different to 90mins of home advantage too. But equally they should have still won that 1st game despite the spying and only have Conway missing sitters to blame. Its also possible they played well because of being so fired up over it too. So I dont think boro should benefit from this, but equally Southampton have to be punished

No doubting its complex and incredibly time sensitive too.
For me Southampton cannot be allowed a chance at promotion. Any points deduction is suspended and any fine will be peanuts in comparison to the PL money. They basically get away with it.

I reckon the findings will be, that Southampton did indeed break the rules, though their malpractice didn't unduly affect the outcome of their two play off games against Boro, and therefore, they'll be permitted to play in the final.
There could still be a sting in the tail though. . .
As well as a fine, (possibly as much as £500,000) they'll be demoted to the Championship, IF they win the final, against Hull.

There's no downside for the EFL to postpone the final. Just the added global publicity and uptick in TV revenues would be worth it for the league.

I read somewhere there isn't capacity to do it at Wembley if not on that date. So they'd probably need another venue which may be problematic and also result in less revenue.
