Somerset v Durham 22nd - 25th July

Pitch is a disgrace. Mental to think another 30 runs would’ve probably been enough.
Big points deduction incoming for the Zummers, this is comical.

There’s more chance of Durham getting a points deduction.
IT'S BLOODY HAPPENING

No it isn’t.
Copilot says ......

In England’s first-class cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has a formal process for assessing and penalising counties that prepare substandard pitches. Here's how it works:

🧾 Criteria for Pitch Assessment
  • Match Referee Report: After each match, the referee evaluates the pitch and can flag concerns about its quality—such as excessive uneven bounce, dangerous pace, or exaggerated spin.
  • ECB Pitch Regulations: Counties are expected to prepare surfaces that are dry, firm, and true, offering even bounce and a fair contest between bat and ball. For multi-day matches, some wear to assist spinners is acceptable later in the game.
⚖️ Investigation & Disciplinary Process
  • If a pitch is deemed substandard, the ECB initiates an investigation through its Cricket Operations and Integrity Team.
  • The case is reviewed under the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) regulations, which determine the appropriate sanctions.
🚨 Possible Sanctions
  • Points Deduction: Counties can lose Championship points. For example, Somerset were docked 12 points (later halved) for a poor pitch against Essex.
  • Warnings or Fines: In less severe cases, counties may receive formal warnings or financial penalties.
  • Reputational Impact: Repeated offences can affect a county’s standing and fixture allocations.

imho, I think this pitch has exaggerated spin, and so early in the match. But I don't know whether it's exaggerated enough, we'd need to know how the ECB would measure that.

One of the umpires is Ian Blackwell. No chance he’s reporting them.
