Somerset v Durham 22nd - 25th July

Table is going to look bleak after this week, we really need to get our finger out in the 4 day stuff, only one win barring the freak game at Worcester, Wagner and Raine been better than most of our batters, totally underperforming in most areas.

I think we have to be honest as well and say a lot of our signings over the last 2/3 seasons have not really paid off.

Gay has shown flashes, as has Ackermann but mainly in the shorter format, and they are both very inconsistent. Rhodes and Parkinson haven't improved us, Coughlin remains a sick note and Connors has been a write off this season.

Our bowling is an area for concern. Raine as usual chips in with 30 wickets @29 but Potts has underperformed this year and our first and second change bowlers appear to be permanently injured or simply not good enough, and then you have the problem in the spin department in red ball cricket. If you can't take 20 wickets on a regular basis then you have no chance of winning games.

This year you also have the batting collapses and the big hole that Bedingham filled in previous seasons.

I think there's equal concern in both areas IMO. Outside of Lees, Bedders and Clark (This season), our batting is so inconsistent. Ackermann has been largely poor other than his twin hundreds at Notts, Rhodes has offered nothing in the CC and Robinson has dropped off from his form of the last 2 seasons. I agree with you bowling wise, and we've never had a match winning 4 day spinner ever I don't think!

Bet you any money the groundsman has been booked all along on a Bristol to Malaga with his wife tomorrow morning.

"Nothing beats a Day2 finish!"

Copilot says ......

In England’s first-class cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has a formal process for assessing and penalising counties that prepare substandard pitches. Here's how it works:

🧾 Criteria for Pitch Assessment
  • Match Referee Report: After each match, the referee evaluates the pitch and can flag concerns about its quality—such as excessive uneven bounce, dangerous pace, or exaggerated spin.
  • ECB Pitch Regulations: Counties are expected to prepare surfaces that are dry, firm, and true, offering even bounce and a fair contest between bat and ball. For multi-day matches, some wear to assist spinners is acceptable later in the game.
⚖️ Investigation & Disciplinary Process
  • If a pitch is deemed substandard, the ECB initiates an investigation through its Cricket Operations and Integrity Team.
  • The case is reviewed under the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) regulations, which determine the appropriate sanctions.
🚨 Possible Sanctions
  • Points Deduction: Counties can lose Championship points. For example, Somerset were docked 12 points (later halved) for a poor pitch against Essex.
  • Warnings or Fines: In less severe cases, counties may receive formal warnings or financial penalties.
  • Reputational Impact: Repeated offences can affect a county’s standing and fixture allocations.

imho, I think this pitch has exaggerated spin, and so early in the match. But I don't know whether it's exaggerated enough, we'd need to know how the ECB would measure that.
