SMB Film Thread 2026

I love 12 Angry Men, but with this one is full of moral questions that it deliberately leaves unanswered. And Jimmy Stewart and George C Scott are a match for Henry Fonda and Lee J Cobb - extraordinary performances.

They're both masterpieces, and ultimately it comes down to personal preference.
I'm of the same opinion with 12 angry men. I'm going to try to find a way to watch after that recommendation.

The Little Things [2021] 6/10
Jared Leto is (maybe) a creepy serial killer. Denzel is the dogged ex-cop hunting him. Rami Malek is woefully miscast.

Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo [2019] 8/10

Cracking doc about the life of DT. Eye-opening.

Flight [2012] 7/10

Denzel as an alcoholic pilot whose plane crashes. Good but could have been trimmed a bit.

Coming Home in the Dark
Very tense and suspenseful 92% Rotten Tomatoes. It's free to watch on PLEX.
Watched around the same time as Speak No Evil (the original Danish film, not the dogshite remake). Throw in Funny Games and you have a brilliant triple bill for a Saturday evening/night. Just don't use it as an introduction to your new girlfriend.

Patton (1970) 9/10
Epic on a par with Lawrence of Arabia. George C Scott is mesmerising in the title role. Illustrates the complexity of the Anglo-American alliance. Patton had the utmost respect for Rommel, but couldn't stand Montgomery.

The Drama (2026) 6/10
Ahead of their wedding, a couple share what each thinks is the worst thing they've ever done, and suddenly their entire relationship is put in jeopardy. Not bad, but can understand why the secret at the heart of the film has been so controversial in the States.

Le Havre (2011) 8/10
A pensioner in Le Havre forms a bond with a young African refugee and decides to help him cross the Channel. Typically quirky film from Aki Kaurismaki.

The Life & Death of Peter Sellers.

Nasty piece of work was old Pete.

7/10
Aye.
I worked in the Hampstead house that he had built in secret for her after they were married. She hated it apparently. It was like a 70s new build suburban library/health centre. All full height windows, exposed brickwork and paving slabbed inner courtyard with pond.

Libel (1959)

Paul Massie is in London and catches sight of Dirk Bogarde on tv with his wife, Olivia de Havilland. He is appalled. He informs the press that Dirk is an imposter. A lookalike who killed another man during a POW escape and assumed his identity. The case goes to trial.

It’s a very showy film with a few holes, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Bogarde is excellent in dual roles, and there’s some interesting ideas about the precarious nature of evidence, and how it can shape diametrically opposed interpretations on a dime.

The Dresser [1983] 8.5/10
Proper f***ing acting. Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney are ludicrously good. I'll have to give it a while before watching the Hopkins/McKellen version.

Driveways [2019] 6/10

Young boy befriends elderly widowed neighbour. Sweet. One of Brian Dennehy's last films.

A Walk Among the Tombstones [2014] 6/10

Another Neeson actioner. Better than a lot he's done recently, probably due to it being a Lawrence Block adaptation.

Michael - Very long music scenes as you’d expect really. It’s his nephew who plays him and looks very much like him in his younger days. Really enjoyed it but I’ve enjoyed most of the recent music Biopics.

This covers from the Jackson 5 upto Bad. Expecting a part 2.

8/10

The Pursuers (1961)

Quota quickie B about some agents tracking down a Nazi living in postwar London under an alias.

Decent performance by Cyril Shaps as the snidey former commandant. It’s quite brisk and a decent way to waste an hour.

This Project Hail Mary seems to be a big deal, am watching now and wil report back. I only really watch YouTube and I'm convinced they give third woeld uploaders a few days grace before kicking in with fhe copyright strikes. I have noticed it time and time again on YouTube.

Not entirely sure where to put this, but a few people might be familiar with his work.

The artist Tony Stella has died. Over the last 5 years or so, his work has garnered a cult following. He’s a film poster artist in the traditional vein, creating hand-drawn/painted images. As far as I know, he was self-taught, and he was increasingly famous for taking old films and giving them new poster art. A load of his work has featured on the cover of boutique label Blu-ray/4k releases, too.

Scant information about his age, etc, is available, but I gather he was possibly only in his 40s. In my opinion, his artwork is excellent and well worth checking out. His style is instantly recognisable, if you know it. A sad loss to fans of this area of film.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die 2026

Starts well with Sam Rockwell chewing the scenery, but the final third loses it's way with some cliches drawn from stranger things and others.

Dead Mans Wire 2026

Very good, the kind of old fashioned sweaty blokes thriller they used to make. Seems to be a trend for old style thriller, which is a good thing imho

Watched Sunlight (2024) with the lovely Nina Conti last night (Amazon Prime). Totally bonkers story which somehow worked. 8/10.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - Channel 4

I'm having to go see the sequel this weekend with my partner, so thought I'd better watch the original so I have some vague idea what's going. It was OK, but not quite sure why it was such a phenomenon at the time, but then I'm not remotely into fashion so I guess that's not too surprising! Streep, Blunt and Tucci were all excellent, but didn't really warm to Ann Hathaway's central character. I actually fell asleep in the last 5 minutes and missed the slight plot 'twist', though that may have had more to do with the fact I'd come off a run of night shifts than anything else!

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026) Omniplex

Well, went to see the sequel last night. Way worse than the first one. A brazen attempt to get the cast back together to go through the same clichéd stories and character developments one more time to try and make the studio a few million $s. And it'll probably work too, judging by how full the cinema was even on the second weekend after opening.

So with watching both movies now over consecutive weekends, that's 4 hours of my life I'm never getting back.... :p

Mortal Kombat 2.
Some excellent fight scenes and over the top gore, with a funny and charismatic lead with the always dependable Karl Urban.
Old style popcorn flick that will keep you entertained for a couple of hours.
7/10.
