SMB Film Thread 2026

Fighting Mad (1957)

A boxer, who has accidentally killed people in the ring, ups sticks with his missus and travels to Canada to live with his uncle. His uncle had recently struck oil, but ne’er do well loggers nearby want a piece of the action.

The scenery - all filmed in Scotland - is lovely. The fisticuffs aren’t too bad. The acting is utterly awful, and the whole thing reeks of ineptitude.

3/10
Is this on netflix?
Will give it a watch. Cheers

You can't go wrong with a movie whose hero is called 'Muscles Tanner' 💪

Joe Robinson ( Muscles Tanner ) was actually born in Newcastle, and appeared in films as diverse as Carry On Regardless and Diamonds are Forever.

He definitely looks the part! As a film it’s terrible. I did like it as an hour of unintended amusement with some cracking scenery.

Creepshow 2
Reasonably watchable slice of 80's anthology horror, The Raft being my particular favourite of the lot.
5/10

Balls Up
Mostly unfunny "comedy" from one half of Farrelly brothers.

Wasted my time on these two:

Righteous Kill [2008] 4/10

Pacino and De Niro collecting paychecks. Bizarrely edited.

Dead Again [1991] 2/10

Kenneth Branagh directs himself and Emma Thompson doing American accents in a woeful attempt at neo noir. Also told in flashback to the 40's with them both playing other people.

And Derek Jacobi....

I've just seen him in another film (review to come). How on earth is he acclaimed as one of our greatest actors? He always seems to play 'a great thespian doing a role', and is constantly trying to upstage everyone else. Typical tricks: when someone else is talking, Jacobi's character will notice a bit of fluff on his own sleeve and pick it off. Or he'll scratch his ear. Or move a pen on his desk.

Probably works on stage, but on screen it's just distracting.

Watched The Nice Guys last night never even heard of it just found it while scrolling through Prime and thought I'd give it a try and glad I did, comedy starring Ryan Gosling who plays a PI and Russell Crowe who plays an enforcer and both are paid to find a teenage girl who's gone missing. Storyline is pretty simple, the acting is very good and there's plenty of laughs in there, apparently it flopped at the box office but has become a cult favourite. 8/10

Pain and Gain 2013 7/10

Never heard of it until it came up on one of the movie channels. Based on a true story although the film is clearly from a comical angle. Not to be taken too seriously.

I really enjoyed Dead again. Good twist at the end.

Oh no. Will be watching out for this constantly now and not paying attention to the film he's in.

Just watched 2001 a space odyssey.
Needed to get off my chest that is totally shite. Couldn't say it to they missus, as she hated it and it's fun making her think it's just her.

Looks amazing even now, nevermind for its time. But fuck me, it's dull as absolutely anything

Just wasted 2 hours watching Hypnotic. Ben Aflick- wife's pick again utter, utter, absolute bollocks and shite 0.1/10.

Apex - thriller, psycho killer set in the Australian outback with Charlize Theron who is definitely getting better with age. Canny watch 7.6/10
Mother's pride -British Comedy, Martin Clunes; thoroughly enjoyable family entertainment 8.3/10.
