SMB Film Thread 2026

Apex - OK, stunning scenery and I like the main 2 actors but this just fell short for me. 5.5/10

Thrash - I'm really not sure if the people who made this were having a laugh or not. Just about OK to have on in the background whilst concentrating on something more interesting 4/10

Exit 8 (2026) - Omniplex

Nightmarish Japanese conceptual psychological horror movie following a young lad desperately trying to escape from a seemingly endless maze of a subway station. Apparently based on a computer game, but wasn't aware of this until after I'd seen it. It was a solid idea, and there a lot of good things in there - particualrly the set design and cinematography. Had quite a strong Severance vibe in the general uneasy weirdness.

However, in the end it didn't really land any big punches and I felt the outcome was a little bet simplistic and 'meh'. Didn't quite deliver on the promise.

Insomnia (2002) - BBC iPlayer

Early (pre-Batman/Inception/Interstallar etc) Christopher Nolan movie, following Al Pacino's hard-boiled FBI agent chasing down a killer in small-town Alaska. A really solid crime thriller, tightly plotted with plenty of moral uncertainties, with some good twists and turns. Strong performances as you'd expect from Pacino, Robin Williams and a young Hilary Swank. Decent but not ground-breaking stuff - hard to many early signs of the really epic and bold filmmaking that would come in the next 20+ years!

Force Majeure (2014) 9/10
A Swedish family on holiday in the French Alps get caught up in an avalanche. The father makes a split-second decision to run rather than stay with his family. In the following days, he and his family struggle to come to terms with his cowardice. Brilliant family drama.

Newsies (1992) 7/10
Musical based on the true story of a strike by newspaper boys in New York in 1899. Massive flop at the box office, but then gained cult status and became a hit Broadway show. The songs aren't up to much, but very good central performance from Christian Bale.

Matewan (1987) 10/10
I first saw this in the town in West Virginia where it was filmed, sitting beside someone who was in it. Masterpiece by John Sayles based on the Matewan massacre, in which mine owners sent in a private security firm against striking mineworkers. Americana musician Bonnie Prince Billy appears as a child preacher.

Hokum – 7.5/10

Damian McCarthy’s follow up to the popular low-budget horror film Oddity which popped up on Shudder back in 2024. Hokum allows us to see him work with a bigger budget and a higher caliber of actor in Adam Scott.

Like Oddity, this one if also set in Ireland but this time, we’re in a creepy hotel out in the sticks. I won’t get into the weeds of the plot, but as a story it felt more of a piece, though there’s nothing here that is quite as scary as the tent set piece in Oddity, which admittedly is a very high bar.

This is my kind of horror. Its low intensity, atmospheric, and the key scary moments are all well-earned and plot driven. There’s a scene that involves a dumbwaiter shaft which will turn many a pant soggy and brown.

More of the same please Damian McCarthy.

Big fan of Ruben Ostlund. Force majeure is brilliant. I should rewatch it.

Just make sure you don't watch the Hollywood version inspired by this - Downhill with Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Absolute garbage!

Watched The Old Guard 1 and 2 after they were mentioned on here.

I didn’t mind them. Mindless comic book entertainment. Dudley Dursley as a villain was amusing. I totally understand why some hate them, though. They just don’t really excel in any area.

Exit 8 sounds a little bit like Vivarium in theme.

Song Sung Blue (2025) - 7/10 - I thought this was a Neill Diamond biopic initially but then read some reviews before realising it was the true story of a tribute act and his relationship with a fellow tribute act performer who joins him in his performances. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson are excellent at there aforementioned due and despite it being a rom-com of sorts it was decent and pretty true to the real life story which included them opening for Pearl Jam!

APEX - Taron Egerton is excellent as always and Charlize Theron is decent.
This should have been right up my alley as I love survivalist type films.
Unfortunately it does not hit the mark, there is is no real jeopardy and it's one those Netflix originals that just wash over you.
It's a Saturday night, leave your brain behind, look at your phone as you watch fodder.
I'd give it a 5/10 for the performances and the scenery.
This should have been so much better.
Scenery was great, egerton has the crazy look and could have been a great psycho but the script never quite got into gear.

Crimes of the Future (2022) 5/10
Body horror sci-fi from David Cronenberg. Fine if you enjoy watching Viggo Mortensen choke every time he eats, or believe that surgery is the new sex.

State of Siege (1972) 8/10
Costa-Gavras political thriller based on actual the kidnapping of an American in Uruguay. Opens with the body of the kidnapped man (Yves Montand) being discovered in a car, then explores what happened from the perspectives of the kidnappers and government.

Los Golfos (The Delinquents) (1960) 6/10
A bunch of friends in Madrid turn to crime to raise enough money for one of them to become a bullfighter - ends with a very graphic bullfighting sequence. Debut from Carlos Saura, who went on to direct better films.

Quadrophenia (1979) - 6/10 - I've never watched this fully so sat down to watch today properly and to be honest it wasn't as good as I hoped. It's a bit clichéd and simplistic although I enjoyed the feel of the movie and the music. Phil Daniels is decent but a bit wooden at times but think that's now his style.

A propos of nothing, Costa-Gavras might be the coolest film director name of all time
