SMB Film Thread 2026

Bridges of Madison County (1995) 7/10
Not as bad as I'd feared. Has more in common with the 'Before' Trilogy than with classic weepies such as Love Story. Decent chemistry between Streep and Eastwood.

Lino Ventura as a gangster on the run from the cops after returning to Paris from Italy. Jean-Paul Belmondo as the man assigned to him as driver/bodyguard. Extremely bleak film noir.

It looks like sycophantic dross from the trailer so I’m guessing this review is relatively accurate.
 
Thrash - sorry but I’m not even going to suggest a rating!

Currently streaming on Netflix, hurricane survivors have to watch out for sharks in rising flood waters.

Liam Neeson is the bank robber who wants to turn himself in, but it’s never that easy…

Typical action/Neeson stuff for fans of The Commuter/The Grey etc. Feels like he’s been making these for 37 years at this point but I’d watch most of them. It’s on Netflix.

How To Train Your Dragon(2025) - 8/10

I have avoided this one since it premiered, simply because I love the animated version and is something of a guilty pleasure whenever it is on. So avoided simply because I didn't think it would match up.

But I actually really enjoyed it, yes the dialogue is very much unchanged, but some scenes play off really well. So this one was a bit of a surprise to me. Definitely be watching it again at some point.

Coogan as mick mac, some randomer as Keane who looks fuck like Keane.

We all nar the story, cheap production and looks it, if you are really bored then gan on then.

Alec Guinness as a one-of-the-lads Scottish officer clashing with his designated successor, John Mills. Guinness is (mostly) impressive with a ginger barnet and Glaswegian accent, though the accent slips occasionally.

About Time (2013) 3/10
Awful, saccharine, time-travelling rom-com from Richard Curtis, with his usual insufferable upper-middle-class characters, and Domhnall Gleeson in the Hugh Grant role. Absolutely full of plot holes. Especially at the end, when it establishes a rule about time-travel, then breaks it without explanation.

Tenet (2020) 7/10
I think I understood this more the first time I saw it. Struggled to follow the time-travelling ins-and-outs this time, though at least it seems to adhere to its own rules, unlike About Time. Watched the 4K IMAX version, so there was at least plenty of impressive spectacle.

Ringside (1949)

Boxer Tom Brown loses his sight after being targeted in a match. His brother, concert pianist Don Barry, decides to work his way up the fight card incognito, as Kid Cobra. He intends to get revenge, and earn enough to fund his brother’s eye operations.

Strange boxing noir with a very low budget and hilarious boxing scenes (compared to later films, anyway). There’s very little logic to the premise and Barry seems to be some kind of all-side-fits-all genius. There’s some hamfisted side-points about finding his emotions to be a better pianist. It’s cheap and absurd.

Enjoyed it! 5/10
