SMB Film Thread 2026

Crime 101 [2026] 7/10
It starts strong with the opening heist but never manages to top it. It's influences feel too obvious, the writing fails to fully flesh out it's novella characters and for a movie that's nudging two and a half hours it never feels epic. Barry Keoghan's sociopathic biker is fun, though.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die [2025] 6/10

A Black Mirror episode trying to be Everything Everywhere All at Once. Unfortunately, it's directed by Gore Verbinski. The third act is a complete failure.

Interesting premise but then craps the bed in the last third

Crime 101 (2026) - Omniplex

Had an afternoon at a loose end, so decided to give this a go. Didn't know much about it, and it's one that seemed to have slipped below the radar given that it's been released right in the middle of Oscars season. I really quite enjoyed it, and it surpassed my expectations!

Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry and Barry Keoghan star in a good ol' fashioned heist caper based on a Don Winslow novel. It was tightly scripted with some slick action sequences, good soundtrack, and well acted for the most part. What I liked in particular was that it wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel or be anything that it wasn't. Just focused on being a pacey, punchy little action thriller.

7/10

Interesting. I thought Keoghan's character was the weakest link in the film. To much of a clichéd stereotype for me.

Project Hail Mary 9/10

Loved the book, loved audiobook even more, film even bettered the ending than the book. Loads of good bits missed out but hoping for a 3hr + directors cut.

Class film, deffo go see it, Ryan gosling is class

Oh yes I’m buzzing now, the book was class and I’m going to see this in IMAX on Saturday. Can’t wait!

Hallow Road (2025) - 5/10 - Pretty average psychological thriller with Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys as parents driving to help their daughter who's hit someone whilst driving. The majority of the movie takes place in the parents car as they talk to their daughter, trying to help work out how best to help with the situation. There's a semi predictable twist at the end of course. I guess it was cheap to make at least.

Both the book and film are class and a proper extended cut with another hour or so wouldn't outstay it's welcome.

Andy Weir released all his nerd info on PHM earlier today, interesting how in depth he goes.

Project Hail Mary (2026). Watched in Wuhan, China. Wife fell asleep and said because it was boring. Far from it IMO. Splendid Hollywood entertainment, great visuals, smart script and three terrific performances; Huller, Gosling and the puppeteer.
