SMB Film Thread 2026

Fletch73

Here it is - another year, another thread.

So what films are people most looking forward to this year?
Has to be Dune: Messiah for me. Others include Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Maggie Gyllenhaal directed The Bride! starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. Spielberg's Disclosure Day and Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary. Also the UK releases of Marty Supreme and Hamnet.

The Bride. Looks a really interesting premise and I love Jessie Buckley.

Obviously Nolan’s new film is always one you look out for so that too. Anyone seen Marty Supreme yet? Looking forward to seeing that albeit from 2025.

It's out today in the UK/Ireland.

I'm not sure if Crime 101 looks good or not. Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan.

Looks like your typical 6/10 action film. Probably be fine but not much more. I’ll watch it

Jay Kelly [2025] 6/10
Uneven in tone and contrived at times. An good performance from Adam Sandler, though.

Saw the trailer for odyssey when I went to see that avatar dirge, hopefully it’s an epic

The Thirty Nine Steps (1978) - Encore

I’ve grown to like this more than the Kenneth More version, even though I love the vibrancy and atmosphere of the 1959 version.

Robert Powell is great, and heads a good cast in this more serious adaptation. It suffers because it’s not as good at the Hitchcock version, but it has a lot to recommend it, such as the pre-war setting, and the general pacing. There’s definitely room for all three films, and they all bring something to the table.

7.5/10

First film of 2026:

Uncut Gems (2019) - Netflix

Been meaning to watch this for a while due to the rave reviews, but always been put off due to the length and the fact that Adam Sandler's New Yorker accent sounded really grating on the trailer (it is!) and wasn't sure I could handle 2hr 15mins of it.

It's a brilliant movie, but good lord it's a stressfull watch! Felt like living through a 2hr+ panic attack/nervous breakdown. Relentless, noisy, unnerving and intense throughout. Gripping stuff, but definitely not something to watch if you want a nice relaxing bit of escapism!!

9/10

there are various clips from tropic thunder, this or the negotiating on the phone scene - and each time i'm processing the fact its tom cruise in a bald cap 'doing comedy' without actually getting into the moment of the film. risky business was a comedy movie so its where he stared but i just can't process it in my own head - perhaps all the mission impossible films, the stunts (the running!) & the scientology have typecast him in my own mind.

His Irish accent in Far and Away is canny funny anarl

One Battle After Another - Liked this, good story and Penn was just on another level. Had a few issues with the final chase sequence but overall a very good movie 7.5/10

Weapons - Best horror I've seen for ages, really liked the early reveal and the character by character angle. For me many horrors spin about a thin plot but there was plenty here and it was used very well. 8.5/10

I've still not finished watching this. About 5 years ago I got 40 minutes in and felt so uncomfortable I just turned it off. I'll get back to it eventually, God knows when, though.

Sinners - didn't realise it was a vampire movie and didn't think it was all that. The scene with different eras of musicians together was poor, despite most of the period parts being very well done. Just OK 5/10

New Knives Out - Liked the change of pace, the church setting and the focus on the new priest. Story rolled on nicely but then got far too elaborate in the last 30 minutes. Still enjoyable trying to spot the clues and work out who is doing what but ultimately you don't get enough to really know. Very passable couple of hours 7/10
