One battle after another 2/5 - seemed to not know exactly what it wanted to be, felt the pacing was off at times and not much meat on the bones story wise. 4 people ended up walking out before the end as well
There doesnt seem to be any middle ground with this film,.its either the best thing since sliced bread or absolutely dreadful with people walking out.

Animal kingdom. Aussie film
Guy Pearce, Joel edgerton and Ben Mendelsohn

Pretty grim and depressing film about an orphaned 17 year old who ends up living with his grandma and dodgepot uncles in Melbourne .

Nothing appealing about this film. Have to say Ben Mendelsohn is an unreel creepy fucker, class performance, awful bastard in this.

Cobra gives it 6/10

I really enjoyed this. Struggled a bit with the main character, seemed to have no agency and didn't warm to him.

Mendelsohn was excellent and 1980s Melbourne was recreated very well, felt like the wild west. I used to listen to a crime podcast called Casefile and they did some episodes on the police corruption and underworld of that era.

Agree I can see why some will love it, some will enjoy the pacing and it lets some characters breathe while also still feeling rushed at times. Enjoyed it and can see it doing well next award season but i didn’t enjoy it as much as some but i can see why others will have liked it more than -aye.

3 Redfords ticked off the list:

The Way We Were [1973] 7/10

I liked the look of this movie but they just never worked for me as a couple, which is a slight problem in a romantic drama. Also, Redford's character is a DICK, but he does have GREAT hair.

Brubaker [1980] 7.5/10

Stuart Rosenberg directs his second prison drama after Cool Hand Luke. This isn't as good, even though the cast are great and the subject matter is gritty as hell. The main problem actually being Redford. Cast almost anybody else and there would (and should) be real jeopardy for the governor trying to clean up a corrupt prison. Because it's Redford, it just isn't there.

Jeremiah Johnson [1972] 7.5/10

I wanted to like this more than I did. Looks gorgeous but has a bit of a stodgy middle.

Is that not kind of the point though? I enjoyed it partly because of that.

Naked Gun - laugh? I nearly did.
All the hallmarks of a good naked gun/police squad movie almost ruined by Liam Neeson “acting” dead pan. Couple of moments did raise a smile Tbf but overall a completely pointless rehash. 4/10

I’m sorry to hear that. I really enjoyed it when I saw it a few weeks back ….precisely because it was so daft.

Might be one of those films which you have to be in the ‘right mood’ for?
‘One Battle After Another’ is a cracking film. It’s a bit of a head scratcher at first - I couldn’t work out if it was based on reality or not - but it’s a great story and hits the fun / scary / cool / tense / repulsive / quirky / provocative buttons.

2hrs 40 mins like.

9/10

Top marks too for the Omniplex. We tried ‘The Avenue’ (which is basically the old upstairs VIP boxes - but massively spruced up) and it was class - loads of food and drink options, you’re sat on sofas with only another dozen or so people max in the room and they serve you at your seat. Definitely worth the extra cost for longer films.

Wow. I’m really surprised by that rating.

I think it’s a bit of a challenge (and I wasn’t sure about it at first tbh) but I think it’s pretty clearly a hypothetical extension of certain current trends in the USA (but not totally irrelevant for the UK since we’ve started importing some of their more extreme political attitudes) and an exploration of what that world could look like.

The film does play with time which is a little disorientating but once you get past that it’s pretty clearly a warning about the human tragedies that could result from some current trends.

That’s a shame mate.

It definitely is one of those films you think about afterwards but, fair play, if it didn’t work for you then I’m sorry to hear that and I hope the next film you see is a corker.

Dunno if there was just something in the air at my showing tbh

I’ve read a few reviews and posts after seeing it and one thing that comes up was how funny it was, it didn’t get any laughs at my showing and it was about 60% full!

Tbh there were a few random outbursts of laughter in our showing tonight - but not many/any where everyone laughed at the same point! That probably says something about the complicated type of film it is.

I guffawed at Sean Penn a couple of times. (No spoilers - but I’m sure you can recall a few points in the second half).

(Mind you, I also recoiled from his character’s absolute repulsiveness at times too).
Watching Naked Lunch on 4k Blu Ray now

Cor blimey
Never seen it. Let me know if it’s worth adding to the watch list. 👍

Highlander, BBC2 HD, now. 11/10 obviously.

It's a remaster of some description (maybe even the 4k downscaled) and by God it looks glorious. Especially when your first experience of it was a 576i VHS in 1986. It's much brighter and more colourful.

Reece Shearsmith is doing a Halloween countdown of horror films on intsa. His 1st one was The Taking of Deborah Logan. It's available on Tubi. I'd never even heard of it but it was excellent. Very creepy and quite a few jump scares, if you like that kind of thing!
