A Foreign Affair (1948) 8/10
Decent Billy Wilder film. A Republican congresswoman visits post-WWII Berlin on a fact-finding mission and discovers that a US Army officer is having an affair with ex-Nazi nightclub singer Marlene Dietrich. The congresswoman falls for an officer who, in fact, is the very man she's investigating.

The Last Detail (1973) 9/10
Apparently the performance Jack Nicholson rates as his best. He plays one of two Navy men assigned to escort court-martialed Randy Quaid to prison. Quirky road movie by Hal Ashby.

Mahjong (1996) 7/10
Taiwanese director Edward Yang was responsible for two of my favourite films, Yi-Yi and A Brighter Summer Day. This one has its moments, but is let down by some extremely wooden English-language sequences. Full movie here:

Another Woman [1988] 8/10
Gena Rowlands looks back on her life in Woody Allen's most Bergman movie. Is it also his best written?
Gena is amazing and it certainly benefits from Ian Holm playing her husband rather than Allen. It could have done with more Gene Hackman and Martha Plimpton.

Thought it was really good up until the point that the 'prophet' appeared, the script was strong enough to carry it without the need for any special effects.

The first part almost had a feel of 'Deathtrap' about it, being set in just a couple of rooms in his house.

Hugh Grant is such an underrated actor.
 
Joker: Folie à Deux - thought the first 20 mins or so were actually pretty interesting but then it just sort of goes absolutely nowhere. An unnecessary sequel. 3/10.

Argo - gripping story, not the most creatively directed but the time flies by. I was a little disappointed post-movie reading up just how much Affleck had rewrote history. 7.5/10.

Match Point [2005] 3/10
Predictable, overly melodramatic pish, full of terrible dialogue and bad acting. Bloody awful. Straight to the bottom of the Woody list.

Two things spring to mind -
I’ve only just realised the journalist actress in this is the same as the reporter in Happy Gilmore.
(No idea what her name is)

Secondly, is there a sequel/prequel/remake that is as bad as this is compared to the original film??
What a disappointment :(
 
Weak Spot (La Faille) (1975) 9/10
Forgotten Euro-thriller newly released in 4K by Radiance. Starts with one of the greatest openings I've ever seen. Ugo Tognazzi (best know for La Cage Aux Folles) is picked up by the security services and transported by car and ferry across Greece for integration in Athens. All the while, his captors are hoping he'll attempt to escape to prove his guilt. Plenty of messages here about self-serving authoritarianism.

Alien (1979) 10/10
Confession: for some reason I'd never seen this. Perhaps because I know all the famous scenes, so I've always known I'll be going into it with the plot spoilt. I watched the Director's Cut, which is actually shorter than the original. No surprises, great film.

Life is Cheap...But Toilet Paper is Expensive (1989) 6/10
Anarchic and often revolting low budget indie film from pre-handover Hong Kong. Captures Hong Kong life really well, but you also have to watch ducks being graphically slaughtered, and a man doing a number two.

Speed 2?

I remember watching An American Werewolf in Paris at the Robins in Durham back in the 90s. It was so poor that I haven’t watched it since.
 
Only just got round to watching Leon: The Professional today. Good but highly problematic. 7/10
