SMB Film Thread 2025

Just finished re-watching the Red Riding trilogy on Netflix. I know it's 3 fillums, but makes for one of the best (and bleakest) TV Detective series around. Amazing acting by some very famous British actors and a complex, intricate story line set over 3 different time periods. I often wonder if True Detective took it's inspiration from this or from the books, as they have a lot of similarities and both are superb.

The Day of the Locust (1975) 6/10
The seedy side of Hollywood in the 1930s. Donald Sutherland (as 'Homer Simpson') is miscast - he should have played the male lead. Very long and never particularly engaging, though John Schlesinger rated this one of his favourites of his own films.

Buster Keaton's first film for MGM, which heralded the end of his creative independence. Some good sequences, but some way short of his best.

Dying to see Weapons

Especially since Pedro Pascal had to pull out of it because of schedule conflicts.

The colours of their outfits also refer to the teletubbies, which Jack O’Connell’s character was watching at the beginning as a small boy.

I’m off to see it next week. I wanted to see it this Friday but the BFI imax have a few more F1 showings so I’m off there.

I like pascal but a lot of his stuff lately seems to dilute what makes him an engaging actor. Brolin’s always good so it shouldn’t have much of an effect on the outcome.

It’s great. I randomly watched the trailer for it on YouTube the other day. Fonda. Bronson. Morricone. All the right ingredients.

Is there someone on here that hates it? Or have I got a dud memory?

The physical projector film cost money. They were probably sending us the same actual copies of the movies that had done the rounds in US cinemas first rather than printing enough of them for the whole world to watch at once.

It's all digital now so there's no additional expense in it playing everywhere at once.

Was happening into the early 2000s. I remember I use to import dvds from a place called movietyme they were based in Canada I think. I would often get movies before they hit the cinema. I remember having dude where’s my car? Months before it came to cinemas here. It happened a lot back in the day apart from the mega releases there seemed to be a delay quite often.

28 years later.

Not a patch on the previous two. Started well before descending into farce. Why did all the infected have no clothes on? Why didn't the doc just kill the alpha after tranquilizing him?

together was ok.

Just ok.

Didn’t really embrace the mental enough imo. The fact Brie and Franco are married in real life boosted their performances a lot but it just went all Hollywood in the final third and kind of lost me.

I thought he was pretty good in Oxbow Incident and The Long Night. Not to mention in the best film of all time (although Cobb takes acting primacy in that one).
