SMB Film Thread 2025

Finished Andor S2 on Friday so we decided to rewatch Rogue One at the weekend.

I remember being blown away by the CGI of Cushing and Princess Leia at the time, but it’s 9 years old now and it’s really aged. AI would do a much better job nowadays I imagine.

Also, after watching a very slow paced Andor with a lot more politics and background, we found Rogue One just a bit hammy and the script wasn’t great compared to the series we’d just watched. Sadly, not as good as I remembered and probably because of recency bias due to the series.

Still one of the better SW films, and certainly the best newer ones.

You preempted me...

Rogue One (2016) 7/10
A real step down after Andor, which had room to breathe and explore its characters and the settings. The Darth Vader cameo here isn't up to much, but I just read an interview with the showrunner explaining that Vader isn't in the TV show because 'you can't do much with him'.

In Our Prime (2022) 7/10
Korean answer to Good Will Hunting. A scholarship kid in a private academy initially clashes with, then is taken under the wing of, the caretaker - who turns out to be a genius maths professor who defected from North Korea. Ticks all the narrative boxes you'd expect.

The Match (2025) 7/10
Based on the true story of a Korean Go champion who becomes mentor to a talented kid - who ends up as his rival. Does its best to make Go exciting, but the main interest is the dynamic between the two main characters. Evokes 1980s Seoul brilliantly.

I think most people, including me, did the same and watched Rogue One after the show ended.
You're right that it felt overly dramatic at times, especially the score, which I found intrusive in comparison. I still liked it, though, and think it's top 3 Star Wars with ANH and TESB.

Taylor Sheridan and Jordan Peele are both pitching for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

Is it just me thinks Taylor Sheridan is the perfect fit for it?

Blumhouse also buying the Saw franchise…hmm

Went to the local screen to see The Salt Path. Beautifully filmed, and doubtless a big plug for the SW tourist board.
The story is well known due to the best-selling book, and it can be upsetting and uplifting in equal measures. Made us count our blessings.
Excellent performances by the two leads, all too easy to forget that Gillian Anderson isn't actually a Brit! Oscar nominations pending, perhaps?

As an aside, I did what a few of the posters on this page did and watched Rogue One after S2 of Andor finished. Agree with the previous comments made here!

Final Destination Bloodlines
The bairn wanted to go shopping at the Metro so I took the opportunity to see a film. There wasn't much I fancied so went with this one mainly because the time worked out.
I'm not a huge fan of the series so expectations weren't particularly high, but I must say this was the best of the bunch by some distance, and seemed to be that bit more knowing and tongue in cheek than the others which served it well.
7/10

Breathe (2017) - 7/10 - True story about a man who contacts polio and his struggles to overcome a life doomed to immobility due to being paralysed from the neck down. With his wife he battles the health system to allow him to be released from hospital and a friend enables him to create a wheelchair with a respiratory system. Pretty amazing story and Andy Serkis does a great job in his directing debut as this could easily have been a boring plod given the subject matter.

Air Force One (1997)

Harrison Ford as Mr President, Glenn Close as Madam Vice President and Gary Oldman as the leader of a group hijacking the titular plane.

It’s ok isn’t it? Not better, not worse. Like, better than Sudden Death, but not nearly as good as Die Hard. On par with Under Siege? Anyway, they should’ve given Oldman more to do, he was batshit.

6/10

JSA (Joint Security Area) (2000) 8/10
An incident at the DMZ between North and South Korea leaves two North Korean soldiers dead and a South Korean soldier injured. Neutral Swiss officers are sent in to investigate. None of the explanations add up. Decent thriller let down a bit by some wooden acting in the English dialogue sequences.

The Amateur (2025) 5/10
Remake with the same problem as the original - the lead actor can't carry the movie. John Savage in the original, Rami Malek in this. Also, a truly stupid set piece involving an airtight exercise cubicle and a bag full of pollen.

Companion (2025) 9/10
A young couple visit a billionaire for a weekend, but the woman isn't who she thinks she is. Enjoyable sci-fi/thriller/horror/satire.

Spot on about the score. It's needs to be it's own thing IMO and not incorporate the score from the originals too.

And I agree with the other poster about the artificial Leia and Cushing.
