channel hoping last night i came across where eagles dare on bbc4, thanks to modern technology i just restarted the movie via iplayer... love it, brilliant 2 & a half hours of silliness but also a great narrative, burton is just burton & clint is the owner of the most guns to never run out of bullets... tomato sauce all round for special effects!

Saw Wes Anderson’s latest movie tonight at the tyneside cinema, the highlight was the trailer for the movies roses. Massive fan of this genre that Anderson created but the Phoenician Scheme is a dub, disappointingly dull.

The Last Showgirl (2024) 6/10
Striking parallels between this and The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke. Both about old-stagers who can't quit despite the world changing around them. Both are knowingly 'Indie' in style, and both unashamedly fished for awards. Ultimately, though, this one doesn't go anywhere.

I read the novel, and the movie is faithful to it. Moving expose of a Catholic Church scandal.

Gangs of New York (2002) 7/10
Evokes the lawlessness of New York in the 1860s. As with too many Scorsese films, it's too long and the rubbish CGI (especially at the end) detracts from the cinematic experience.

With Gangs of New York if the whole film had been as good as its best moments it would be his best film, and if it had all been as bad as its worst moments it would be by far his worst film

I won’t bother with a review. Or even a breakdown. What I’ll say is, if you love the craft of moviemaking, then watch it.

I will say it’s not as perfect as critics would have you believe but the confidence on show from Ryan Coogler makes for great viewing.
 
Captain America brave new world - slightly more earnest vibe at the start. Had totally forgotten that “celestial island” was the main plot driver for the eternals (had to be reminded of it). Overall meh out of ten.

Haven't seen the first 2 but Bill the Butcher single-handedly saves Gangs of New York from being total dross.
 
The Last Man to Hang? 1956)

Tom Conway leaves his wife, Elizabeth Sellers (second billing, hardly in it) and gives her some sleeping pills, without realising that the housekeeper has already given her some. He is brought to trail for her murder.

A clumsy narrative spoils what could have been an intriguing talky drama. The payoff just doesn’t make enough sense. The best bits involve the jury deliberations. 4.5/10


Man at the Carlton Tower (1961)

Back to the Edgar Wallace set. A police chief asks an old colleague for help, after a jewellery shop robbery and police death bear the hallmarks of two returning villains from Rhodesia.

What a great cast. Lee Montague, Maxine Audley, Allan Cuthbertson, Alfred Burke and Nigel Green put in a great shift. Enjoyable and engrossing, albeit predictable. 6.5/10
 
Watched the 'the ballad of wallis island' last night, wonderful little awkward comedy from Tim Key & Tom Basden (who does all the music himself it would appear). loved it for a saturday night, very wholesome and typical in comedy style to what you expect from Tim Key. Really enjoyed it, might help if you like that kind of stuff if you're going to enjoy it yourself.
 
I'm catching up on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

I'm so sick of the teenage girl genius who knows everything from minute one of the film trope. The men are of course all incompetent clowns of one variety or another.

There's the bones of an interesting story here but it's relying on nostalgia to buy your goodwill.

Steven Seagal is out to avenge the death of his friend. Standard 90’s action stuff. He plays an Italian American called Gino Fellino. Yep, you read that correctly.

William Forysthe is pretty menacing as Ritchie but is under used (scenes cut by Seagal who thought he was upstaging him) and there’s some half decent stuff going on at times, but it’s very difficult to get past Seagal’s accent and beret wearing.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY RITCHIE DID BOBBY LUPO?

That film was cheesy as f**k even back then,seaguls receding hairline was also starting,I am going to have to watch it again.

Above the Law, Marked for Death, Hard to Kill were the others that all seem to come out at the same time. They were like a early 90's guilty pleasure, ham acting, same plot, his trademark fighting moves and 4 cans of Stella for an evening of brainless fun.
