There's a great article about the cinematography here. For the hotel/swimming pool sequence: "Somebody stayed in the elevator, the first operator gave him the camera, he went down and the third guy took the camera through the lower level and the pool. The camera could go into the water because we had it in a plastic bag from the supermarket.”

The Last Showgirl

Melancholic look at the dying days of the old school Vegas showgirl performers starring Pamela Anderson, Dave Bautista and Jamie Lee Curtis. An interesting idea for a movie, beautifully shot and with some strong performances. However, everything just felt a bit half-baked.

There were loads of intriguing little interactions between characters that looked like they were going to be explored more, but they were just left hanging and weren't fleshed out at all. Film was only 1hr 25mins, so there was plenty of space to have dug into the characters with a bit more complexity. All just felt a bit unsatisfying in the end, as I think it could have been a much better movie.

Or, how to repurpose an unused Scream script.
Beginnings was canny but can only take you so far.
It wasn’t offensive or anything, so immediately better than Thanksgiving. But was extremely predictable.

Unfortunately for filmmakers, I’d say Scream has wrapped the mystery slasher comedy genre up now and let just a bunch of highly predictable clones in its wake.
 
Bat☆21. Thought I'd give this a viewing after the loss of Gene Hackman. Not bad but with some typical 80's stereotypes (loudmouth rebel who gets into trouble) including a line about inflight movies which left me wondering when did those start as this was a Nam film?. Apart from that, Gene is great. 6/10

What the hell did I just watch? What did I just purchase on expensive Criterion bluray that I will probably never watch again? Why on earth did Dylan Baker agree to take on this role and how did it not destroy his career? Did Rufus Read (the young lad who played poor Billy Maplewood) receive a sufficient level of trauma counselling after he finished filming this? Why am I sympathising with this despicable collection of deplorable c*nts?

Just a small selection of the questions that puzzle me after subjecting myself to this spunk-glazed suburban nightmare.

It seems unfair that American Beauty took all the plaudits for peeling back the surface of the idyllic American family image and showing the grim reality beneath. This reveals a malaise of tragedy, perversion, and loneliness that rings so much truer than the Sam Mendes Oscar bait that followed a year later. Problem is, it’s immeasurably more troublesome and difficult to digest, to the point where I felt like I needed to pressure-wash the inside of my brain afterwards.

I’m not sure if ‘impressive’ is the right word, but to weave all these intertwining narratives between one another and to effortlessly sway between black comedy satire and repulsive drama is… something.

Found it pretty absorbing and compelling right from the get go, and didn't feel like it was the 3hr 35m slog it was billed as (the 15 min interval certainly helped though!). Did feel the first half was stronger than the second, and didn't find the last 20 minutes totally to my liking.

Incredible performance from Adrien Brody, thoroughly deserves all the awards and plaudits he's received. Beautifully shot film, and the score was fantastic too. Well worth seeing on the big screen, as I'm not sure it would land the same on a TV.

Just watching Heart Eyes.
Better than those other comedy slashers like Happy Death Day so far, nice cinematography. Whenever there’s a joke though, instead of canned laughter there’s a kind of pause followed by slightly louder “joke”.

See im quite harsh with scores because I think 9s and 10s get given out to easily and its all about opinions anyway.
No such thing as a ten.
9s I've probably got a couple.
8s a few more.
I love it when a movie or series leaves me thinking about it for days or weeks after.
7 is a very good score in my opinion.

Gonna watch Memento. Heard its ok haha.
