Hells Kitchen gets such a bad rap in films 🤣 after Tribeca it’s my favourite area of NYC.

*Now* it is, sure
State of Grace [1990] 8/10
Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Terry returns home after ten years. He reconnects with Jackie, a childhood friend and member of the Irish mob, and rekindles his love affair with Jackie’s sister Kathleen.

Any mob film that comes out the same week as Goodfellas is probably going to get overlooked. Sadly, this was but it's a gem waiting to be discovered. The cast is top-class - Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Gary Oldman, Robin Wright.
On Prime now.

Think I'll be doing that as a Hidden Gem some time

Not exactly a film, per se, but a documentary about films.

Enter the Clones of Bruce Lee (2024)

I knew a lot of the information anyway, but it was still a fascinating insight into the industry, and the way it exploited the death of a star. It was great to see so many icons from the scene in the 70s and 80s. Even since filming, some have passed, so hats off to the filmmakers for tracking these people down.

Is there any clear distinction on the criteria for supporting actor at the Oscars?

Because I watched Real Pain and Culkin is as much the main character as Eisenberg is. Fair play to them for blagging on Oscar for that category like.

As predicted, Anora did the business. The Brutalist 2nd.

Glad to see The Substance come away with one albeit for hair and styling.

Dune 2 wins best sound. Fair enough.

If you'd said middle of last year that Demi Moore would get nominated for best actress among other nods and not win I'd have thought fair enough, good on her and well done for such an out-there film getting recognition. But she'd looked like the favourite to win it for so long that it ended up being a surprise she didn't get it

I was slightly disappointed, moreso because I like seeing genre films get the nod and I still think Sigourney Weaver was robbed when she was nominated for Aliens.

Hard to believe, but Adrian Brody at the Oscars was only his second most embarrassing public appearance.

Another Best Picture winner that's nowhere near my favourite film of the year - I ranked it 9th of the 10 nominated and 31st overall.
I decided to have a look through the list of past Best Picture winners - 97 of them - I agreed with 8.

A Complete Unknown (2024l - 7/10 - Decent biopic with some great performances. I just felt it was maybe a little safe in it's delivery. I'd probably moan if it was done more abstractly but I expected a little bit more.

Anora was my favourite of the nominees, though I haven't seen I'm Still Here. Amazing fall from grace for Amelia Perez. When the Oscar campaigns started, it looked set to sweep the board. So pleased it didn't. The song and dance routine about vaginoplasty is one of the worst things I've ever seen on film.

Gutted that Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat didn't win best documentary. Probably my favourite film of last year.

The Presence - horror film shot from the viewpoint of the ghost. Shite 4/10

Wolf man - werewolf film, nothing new and not as good as other similar films. Not much character or story development, slow moving boring plot. 5/10

Not sure what it is but new films just seem to be shite on the whole, every now and again there’s a half decent one. Maybe it’s due to the rise in streaming platforms, films churned out quickly with lower budget, trying to be something new and quirky.
If you want a good film from the viewpoint of a ghost, A Ghost Story starring Casey Afleck is very good.

I'm quite pleased for Zoë Saldaña getting the supporting actress, I thought she was definitely the best thing about that movie.

Really need to see Anora - was disappointed that the Omniplex in the town didn't seem to show it. Maybe they'll put some screenings on now that it's won a load of Oscars?

New whalberg movie Flight Risk. Terrible, whats happened to Whalberg man? 2 outa 10

Shutter Island. Excellent. Love out luke this so any similar movies recomended would be welcome 🙏 7 out 10

Inception. Excellent. Really good fun mind bending stuff. Matrix-ish
7 outa 10

Fight or Flight. Sky Cinema offering which I enjoyed against my better judgement. Just lots of crazy fights on a plane with minimal plot. I guess similar to Bullet Train, which I didn't like. Maybe you just got to be in the mood. 6/10.
