I've watched it, and I wouldn't watch it again.

But it comes closest to what I saw.

A mates grandad fought in WW2. He had worked for a law firm before the war and made his mouth go after Dunkirk, barrack room lawyer type. He found himself in Iceland for his attitude, filing compensation forms for Icelandic sheep farmers after squaddies had stolen and eaten one of their lambs

He was called back into duty for D-Day and was part of the war crimes unit. His job was to record everything in minute detail. He was among the first british troops in the camps, not with a gun, but with a pile of legal pads. Counted the bodies, opened the mass graves, photographed the gas chambers.

Went back to being a barristers clerk in chambers after the war, but never got over it.


Anyway enough of that, I think I am distracting from a very good thread

The Brutalist [2024] 8/10
Architect László Toth arrives in America from post-war Europe to rebuild his life. Wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren recognizes his talent for building but legacy comes at a heavy cost.

Stunning sound and cinematography and incredible performances by Brody and Pearce. But it's WAY too long and Felicity Jones is horribly miscast. One to admire but not love.
 
A Complete Unknown (2024) 8/10
Thoroughly enjoyed it. The period details are immersive. As others have said, it doesn't break any new ground, but we've already got I'm Not There for that. I was slightly distracted by Edward Norton, who is younger than me, but looks the spit of my granddad when he was in his 70s.

While checking the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, I stumbled across this. How have I not heard of Mediaversity before? Surely it's a false flag website created by anti-woke culture war warriors. Just as A Complete Unknown is a very male movie, it’s also a very white one—supremely focused on the white figures that uplifted folk in the 1960s, with little real estate dedicated to the genre's history as a Black art form*; and: The film has even less time for queer people than it does women or racial minorities. Nary a mention of queer people in this at all, save for some potential undertones of homosocial care Dylan has for heroes like Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) and friends like Bobby Neuwirth (Will Harrison).

* Total dismissal of the entire tradition of European folk music.

Conclave (2024) - 8/10 - Excellent dramatisation of the process of electing a new Pope. Ralph Fiennes was very impressive alongside many of the other actors and the direction/cinematography was brilliant. Not a subject I'd particularly fancied watching but must say it's one of the better movies I've watched recently.
 
Spaceballs (1987) - What more can you say, Mel Brooks taking the piss out of Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, Planet of the Apes :lol: Still very watchable. Although it has taken me 38 years to realise the voice of the ship/Mega Maid was non other than that of Majel Barrett :eek: 10/10

Not much happens and the twist was shite. Over rated.
 
Went to see The Witch there earlier with a Robert Eggers Q and A before the film. Me and my pal walked round the corner from the pub to the cinema and happened to see him so I got a photo with him like a fanboy :lol: He’s quite a shy bloke. Said the thing he’s most proud of in the film are the performances, which is pretty selfless coming from a director.

Film is as good as I remember. The part in the barn with the old witch still send chills down my spine.

Brilliant film. One of my childhood favourites. So much to enjoy in it.
