Best to worst (waits, nervously)
Alien3s biggest issue for me is the set and casting, it’s a bit panto. At the time of release I was beside myself they’d killed hicks but over time I’ve gotten why (in fact, the directors cut of Aliens shows exactly WHY- ripley had to lose everything).

I enjoy Prometheus as a spin off, even with the ridiculous characters. Likewise, I sort of enjoy Covenant because you can switch your brain off or be doing other stuff, “I’ll do the fingering” and all 🤣

I’d have 3 after Aliens still personally but can’t argue otherwise…the sicko in me MIGHT say Resurrection has some better stuff than Romulus but it’s a fine line.

Alien/Aliens joint top as I can’t split them. Then a big gap before 3.

This part of the vampire genre has been done a lot mind. It's the third version of Nosferatu specifically - I need to maybe give the 1979 version another go as I seem to be the only person who doesn't think it's a classic - not to mention a film they made about the original production that imagined if the main actor was really a vampire. Official adaptations of Dracula are legion, if you just count the main ones you've got the 1931 Lugosi, Hammer's with Christopher Lee, 1979 with Frank Langella, the Coppola one and all the various sequels, spin offs, versions of the story from other characters' point of view like Renfield and Van Helsing, even had a spoof with Leslie Neilson. Not to mention a lot of successful vampire films have taken it in all different directions like Near Dark or Blade. Did we need another version of the basic Dracula story?
Howsabout if him and his marra actually stayed in Whitby and opened a B&B? His marra could spend his daytime doing a touristy blog/pod up n down the coast from Bridlington to Saltburn and they could use Boro midweek home game hoolie clashes as cover for his neck quenching habit. Eventually the visits to Teeside and its smoggy atmosphere start affecting the Counts health and they start venturing further to games further afield for his blood fix.
The Count could eventually fall in love with the beautiful game and they both spend eternity in pursuit of membership of the 92 club so that he can pin their badge to his cloak. Of course they’d be constantly foiled by the introduction of promotion/relegation from the Conference and the proliferation of new stadiums.

Can’t be any worse than Gladiator 2.
Just been reading that Eggers has written and will direct a Werewolf movie for December 2026 called….

Werwulf. Based in the 13th century so should be a cool period.
Wot with no motorbikes or sunglasses or open top cars or leather jackets or jukeboxes?

Robert Eggers next film has officially been announced and I’m a bit meh. Werwolf, a werewolf horror set in 13th century England.

The Damned (2024). Group of fishermen running out of food decide not to rescue some shipwrecked sailors and their collective guilt conjures up a vengeful spirit. Really enjoyed it as gets on with the story (less than 90 minutes long) and creates an unsettling atmosphere. 7/10.

Oscar nominations are out:
BBC News - List of nominations in full for Oscars 2025

Emilia Perez leading the way. Disappointed that Small Things Like These/ Cillian Murphy seem to have been overlooked, as he should Def be in the Best Actor mix.

Flow (2024) - 6/10 - Decent enough animation. Expected more but considering it was made using free open software it was decent. Let down by the lack of detail on the animal characters and it going a bit Disney at the end.

I fully support your refusal to acknowledge the AVP abominations. IMHO

Alien
Aliens
Prometheus
Alien3 Assembly Cut
Covenant
4 (Resurrection)
Romulus

Resurrection is totally shit but it does offer some innovations I liked:
  • Being chased through the water by swimming aliens
  • Aliens killing one of their own so its blood would burn through the wall of the cell they were stuck in
  • An impregnated human grabbing an enemy and holding his head to his chest so the burster would kill them both

My memory of 4 is just laughing out loud in a “not again” sort of way when Winona Ryder’s character has the reveal.

AVP Requiem might be one of the worst films of the 00’s.

Shirley he'd be ok there because the clouds permanently block out the sun?
Good point. Maybe with the newish clean air rules n regs the count gets worried that the sun may start shining in Teeside so he starts travelling to games around the countries in his box?

The Likely Vlads

Been to see “A Complete Unknown “ today, thoroughly enjoyed it, good film, of course if you’re not a fan of the subject matter then I’d suggest it’s not for you.
I'm not a massive dylan fan but still enjoyed the movie. I like my music though, but didn't really know his life story in say the same way I would if they made a beatles movie.

One question I've got, and this is hardly a spoiler... my only music knowledge fact about Dylan is that he went electric at a gig in Manchester (someone famously shouted judas from the audience). Is that what the films shows, but they've moved it to Newport or did it also happen in Newport (and is that before or after Manchester?).

Not sure of the history marra, yes I was aware of the flak he got for his dereliction of the pure folk ethic, where that was I’m unsure a quick google confirms the Newport event and his use of an electric guitar and amplified sound.

makes the film even better then, a hollywood movie that was true! for me it was really engaging and timothee chalamet is brilliant for my money.

They added the Manchester incident to the Newport scene in the film as a bit of dramatic licence. Pretend all the big moments happened in one place to streamline the story kind of thing
