Is that a better version? It's appearing on Amazon Prime but not convinced that it's not just the regular version when I'm clicking on it.

Amazon Prime and Disney+ will be the theatrical release version where the morons at Fox locked the director out of the editing room and got a f***ing monkey with scissors to smash together a load of random footage

It's flawed in any version but the Assembly Cut is actually half decent

I remember reading about that. I just can't recall Brian Glover being in it.

Just finished Aliens. Slow start but terrific action packed film once it got going. The old memory is going and as it's over a decade since I last watched this I'd forgotten a lot of it. Thinking of risking Alien 3 next though I remember it was widely panned - I've got a vague memory I didn't mind it. We'll see.
For me Alien3 is the one that could be dropped from the franchise and makes no discernible difference to any thread/story running through all the movies, no matter how loose. If you've just watched Aliens I'd go straight into Prometheus, different feel but similarly epic. Not without it's faults but it's one I've watched several times and always enjoy. Saying all that, I haven't seen the Assembly Cut of Aluen3.

A podcast called Double Reel did a really interesting episode about how they could have done Alien 3 differently with a reworking of the Gibson script and some changes in the storylines of Ripley, Newt and Hicks

The Assembly cut is infinitely better BUT, I always found the Xeno coming out of a bull didn’t work as well as a dog - due to its design in the movie.

Much more depth in it as a whole though, and the religious aspects are a lot clearer.

I'm a massive Aliens fan (Well first two), when Alien3came out, I was gutted Hicks and somewhat Newt wasn't in it. Both living to fight another battle in a different world/scenario with new characters would have been good follow on. Not saying Alien3 is utter garbage but bang average to what it followed.

Alien 3 is the end of the Ripley story arc so that trilogy works well for me. Obviously the 3rd is nowhere near as good but is still, story wise, vital.

The rest can and should be considered only as cash cows. I do enjoy them though.

The rest are fan fiction.

Romulus was shite imo. I’m in a very small group who feel that way but it was just a collection of extremely underwhelming set pieces which in turn were lifted from much better material.

I've only seen Prometheus once when it came out and Michael Fassbender aside I was underwhelmed. Plus if I can avoid Idris Elba, I will. However since I've started watching them all again I may give it another go.

Don't get me wrong, I still bang on Alien3, just doesn't get rewatched as much as the first two. Alien Romulus was OK, just with all the call backs and references to the first few films, it reminded me just how good they were compared to what I was watching.

Alien3s biggest issue for me is the set and casting, it’s a bit panto. At the time of release I was beside myself they’d killed hicks but over time I’ve gotten why (in fact, the directors cut of Aliens shows exactly WHY- ripley had to lose everything).

I enjoy Prometheus as a spin off, even with the ridiculous characters. Likewise, I sort of enjoy Covenant because you can switch your brain off or be doing other stuff, “I’ll do the fingering” and all 🤣
