Don't think their is a legal obligation to have one. But, when your meter is due to be changed they will put a smart meter in. Some tariffs are dependent upon a smart meter as well.

You cannot force people into it.
The companies knew this when they were 1st introduced.
If your old meter has issues, though, they'll put a smart meter in.

I don't think anyone would keep a stock of the mechanical meters. I suppose they could keep pulls from people who've opted to have smart meters put in, but if they're pushing everyone to smart meters, that would make little sense.

Don't really see a downside to them. Saves the faff of having to read them.

Dynamic pricing is the downside. They will charge you more at peak usage periods. And will set it off with cheaper prices at a time when you not likely to use it as much.
They have your usage data.

That hasn't happened yet but if it did then would it be such a bad thing to encourage people to cut peak usage?
That data is also available to you to inform better decision making
Surely you have to sign up to that though.

Mine includes the standing charge. It's usually about 90% of the total, absolute disgrace. Doesn't incentivise people to cut back usage

I'd been against them for years and always ignored every correspondence asking me to get one. had a letter a few months ago though saying my meter certification was expiring and it was cleverly worded to make it sound like i needed to replace it with a smart meter. i later found out i didn't actually need to do that but by that time had already had the smart meters installed

Meter readers have lost their jobs.
Thats a big downside to smart meters in my opinion.
