They recommend that every time the contract is up for renewal. Never makes any difference.

You could also argue that without the influx of money from Sky, and sponsors attracted because of the exposure, that England, and county cricket for that matter, wouldn't be in such a healthy state and produced players capable of taking England to #1 in the world test rankings.

The players playing now and those that come through in the next five years will be those that grew up with access to it on terrestrial TV. It's 15 years down the line when they want another Darren Gough from a working class Yorkshire village when they'll be knacked.

SKY's money is essential but to give them every domestic game is stupid. Surely they could package up a couple of England ODIs, some domestic T20 and maybe a test and give it to a freeview channel even if it was for nowt.

A 5th of the 2005 ashes tests what about the other series? I know really the figures are pretty much the same. Everyone who plays cricket has some responsibility for its future, If your looking for something to promote get cricket back into primary and secondary schools. Coverage has never been so good kids should be thankful.

Hence the reason the ECB wont do nowt that might piss off Sky like giving rights away for free or very little money, the ECB cant exactly turn round and say to Sky you will pay top whack but we are going to offer another broadcaster a few things for next to nowt

Sky are in the business of getting subscribers and if the ECB were to try and palm a few games off on normal tele I reckon Sky would tell them no chance, we pay top money want all the rights as it will get more people subscribing.

Why? Sky is known as council TV. And for good reasons.

Anyway, my point wasn't whether the players watched on BBC or SS1. The money filtering down to grass roots is more important. Washington are a prime example. The funding they've received has helped them substantially.

The ECB could fully justify giving away a small portion of games to say C5 if SKY kept 95% of the rest (including all the premium stuff).

It would actually enhance the SKY product if people were given a taster of it on terrestrial TV. Giles Clarke obviously reckons that this generation of 8 year olds will just tune in to Blowers on 5LiveSportsExtra though!
